motorheadabega writes "BBC is carrying the story that as of today the PS3 is available for preorder for only £550 ($1,020). All that and they can't even guarantee delivery before Christmas." From the article: "The electronics giant had originally planned to launch the new console in the spring, but was forced to delay because of technical problems with its high-definition Blu-ray DVD drive. The PS3 comes in two different models. The basic model has a 20GB hard drive, while the more expensive model comes with a 60GB one. The lower end model also lacks wi-fi, a slot for memory cards and a HDMI port for high-definition programmes. "

      Okay - maybe not, but it's getting a lot of interest from the developers. Developers like a low power machine with a new controller. The can spend all their time fooling with funky gameplay mechanics. The extra power od the PS3 has potential, but getting the most out of that is a lot of work programming, optimising and debugging, whereas new gameplay mechanics are a lot more fun to work with.
      • To be fair it can also argued that a decent chunk of development cost can and will go into R&D regarding usage and application of a new interface device. Finding out what ways people will enjoy them the most and feel most comfortable with requires targeted research which costs money, and depending on how well you want it studied could also take time. Just food for thought.
        • I'm not talking about the studio bosses and beancounters. I'm talking about the actual programmers and designers. Everyone I've talked to wants to develop for it. It's true, research is expensive, but it's also interesting work. Graphics and physics were interesting a few years ago, but now there's a lot of work for small incremental improvements. It's just not as cool anymore. Nintendo are actively ewncouraging people to try something different. Not that I don't look forward to the promise of the PS
          • I'd say its pretty fair to argue that its not the designers and the programmers who have a say in what gets funded and published, granted i can see developing new and inovative ways to use the wiimote seems very fun and refreshing. As far as physics and graphics , I still think there is a lot to be had in that area I think in this generation we'll see a wider variety of animations and animations that are more lifelike with facial and muscle movements that are visible and that convey emotion and feeling.     Before you think "Jesus Christ! £550 for a PS3!!!", bear in mind that this is a bundle of the high spec PS3 (with 60GB HDD) and 3 games, AND free shipping.

    If you work that back, based on £40 a game, the console cost is £430... which is right on the money for the £425 previously reported. The real newsworthy part of this story is the fact they're taking pre-orders so soon. Do I smell a publicity stunt on the part of play.com?

    Note: I still think that the supposed price (£425) is ridiculously expensive, and I'm not trying to argue that this is in any way "cheap".
    • True, but that doesn't mean that by preordering it you're guaranteed anything, infact:

      The website says that because of an expected European shortage, it cannot guarantee delivery before Christmas.

      £550 for a console is outrageous, no matter what else you're getting, and to add to that you may not even get it by Christmas is taking it too far.
    • Just so you know, shipping is not a big thing in the UK. You can next day something like a PS3 anywhere in the UK for the equiv of about $10. We're only small. ;)
    • Then again, as the Samsung Blue Ray player seems likely to cost about the same: $900 or about £400, it doesn't look so bad - play HD discs, and play games.

      I spent £150 on a Sony DVD player years ago, and then the Ps/2 arrived a couple of months later and cost a little bit less, and you could do other things with it...

      Think I'll just wait for the bare drives to arrive and upgrade my HTPC :) (ok it might be around 2008 by then but I feel there's a lot of dust that needs to settle on the whole HDM

        I thought the same thing, but then realised that the DVD output quality of the PS2 was, frankly, crap. I'm hoping the Blu-ray (and DVD) playback quality of the PS3 will be decent, but it'll probably be a good idea to wait for a couple of unbiased reviews before getting one.

    There is nothing we don't already know in TFA other than that it's available for pre-order. Also note that the pre-order package includes three games. There has to be something more (can't look at the actual offer as I'm at work) to justify the £125($235) difference. Unless of course the games are £42($79) each. Of course, they're probably counting the VAT in there, so maybe it is just the three games. Still... damn expensive.

    I could spend $1000 on a computer that would be four times more powerful, and I would be able to buy video games for it at a fraction of the price. There's nothing coming out for PS3 that really excites me, so why would I waste that much money on it? Personally, I thought that Xbox 360 was too much money, but compared to the PS3, I think I know what will be bought for Christmas.
    • So give us a url to a shopping cart on some webshop showing us the parts for a $1000 computer _four times_ more powerful than a PS3.
      I'd very much like to get one of those.
      For all I care, you can buy a Virtual Boy for christmas. It's about the games, I've spent a heck of a lot more than $1000 on games only for my PS2, and the console cost me $400. If I can get a PS3 for $600, I still have $800 to spend on games.
      • I'm thinking the same thing. Between my brother and I, there's maybe $2000 of PS2 games at our house, and I've still got a half a dozen I keep meaning to get to buying. $400 versus $600 for a console is really the least of my concerns. If the PS3's lineup is good, they're getting my money.
    • Yep! You'll have a Blue-Ray player and a Cell processor in each of those, output in full 1080P HD, right? And it will play PS1,2 and 3 games with built-in 802.11b/g wireless with bluetooth controllers? I can't wait! If you can make those boxes, I'll take 100 of them right now for $250 each. Where do I order? Sony's DRM is teh suck though. But you can also pre-order a PS3 from www.lik-sang.com with no downpayment, even here in the US.

      • Current generation console games cost 60€. Next gen console games are starting to cost 68€ and Sony seems to be intent on going even higher. PC games still go for 40-45€, sometimes lower. PC games drop in price much faster than console games and there are many games released at a cheaper price point because they are coming from smaller developers (and yes, those can be found on store shelves). Also some PC games allow modifying them (and if it's just adding maps and rebalancing the weapons) t
        • Ah, a European gamer. Here in the US, PS2 and PC games are both around $50. XBox 360 games are $60, but Sony hasn't said anything about matching suit.

    Gamestation in the UK have been taking PS3 pre-orders for weeks. We've been taking them at £425 for whatever the basic 60Gb package is (i.e. presumably a box with the console and one controller - similar to the PS2). The store I work in has actually stopped taking pre-orders because we've already taken more than we're likely to get come November 17th.

    For £550 with 3 games looks like the £425 price is correct, and that's a pretty decent saving on the game prices since we're expecting new PS3 games to cost above £50 new (Xbox 360 games are generally £49.99 new here in the UK). Also notice that Play.com are saying the games included may change due to availability - or more likely they may put more desirable games into the package if better launch titles are announced. There's really nothing next-gen about a Singstar game from what I saw of E3 footage.

    What's funny is that, by now, probably more people have preordered the PS3 than are likely to receive them at launch. Looks like the $600 price tag may not hurt Sony too much, after all. I'm interested to see how this will all turn out.
  • 1. Order PS3 for Sony fanboys from UK.
    2. Sell it on eBay after launch while artificial shortage exists.
    3. Use profits to buy Wii.
    4. Put rest into Nintendo shares.
    5. Retire to sunny Bermuda.
    • I did that last christmas with the xbox 360. Pre-ordered two, one using my name and the other using my gf's and sold them on eBay 2 weeks before the holiday for ££££. BINGO, I made so much I upgraded by PC and is so powerful now I don't even think the PS3 can match it's power and I still have extra for a Wii. Me happy, customer is a happy fool. :D

    Play.com wasn't the first site to offer the PS3 for pre-order, Gamestation (http://www.gamestation.co.uk/product.asp?id=ps3h0 02) had it on their site the day after the press conference, there may have been others too.
  • In local non-chain game store the other week trading in ancient PS1 and games - female assistant rather disinterestedly asked me if I wanted to pre-order a PS3. No thanks, I say, I'm getting a Wii. You'd have thought I'd plugged her into the mains! Wasn't it cool, had I seen the E3 videos, wouldn't a lightsaber game totally rock, didn't the new Zelda look amazing? Chatted for a while, then went downstairs and browsed the pre-owned Xbox titles. G.b.t.c asked me if I was interested in upgrading to a 360.
  • All this speculation about which console will dominate, nobody can tell, its all going to be decided whichever manufacturer signs an exclusive deal with whatever game will be the most popular this fall. Look at how many ps2's were sold when GTA came out, I predict the same for any console that comes with such a killer game. We should not look at the consoles but at the games.

      Good point. But I think a lot of us actually looked at the gaming lists for the different consoles. I did. What I saw was that the Wii has a lot of really fun games, in multiple areas of gaming, that I want to play, and that it was kind of spare for the PS3 and 360, unless I was a sports geek (hint - get a 360) or needed Blu-Ray (hint - get a PS3).

      So, I'm down for a Wii right now. In fact, I like it so much, I bought the company! - literally, today I bought 500 shares of NTDOY.PK (Nintendo ADR shares), after having sold off 400 Microsoft shares at the market peak (before the crash).

      Call me a fool if you will, but my guts rarely wrong about these things. And over the years I've learned to listen to my gut.
  • ..Don't get your hopes up that you'll get one on launch day. Play received over 400 pre-orders on the first day this went live, and it's been up for a few weeks now.

    And just because you are first doesn't mean you will get one. They will send the units out to their biggest customers first, rather than those who were first in the queue. Just ask any number of dissapointed people who tried to pre-order a 360 from Play, only to have to find one elsewhere when their preorder wasn't honored
