I Wanna Watch Cartoons! 132
aztektum writes "Since Saturday's tend to be slow days and it is Saturday morning I thought I'd send along Cartoon Network news. Ain't It Cool has a breakdown of Cartoon Networks 2002 itinerary." Several of the
shows have been mentioned here before (Pilot Candidate and Gundam 0083 are
both enjoyable so far. As is YuYu). Mentions the arrival of new DBZ in september.
Also lots of non anime bits including Justice League (Many new episodes!).
Also new Harvey Birdman, Brak, and Sealab 2021 although Space Ghost seems absent from the roster.
Anyway, there are a lot of other shows mentioned too, but those are the shows
that I have commanded tivo to snag ;)

Scooby is too, especially since they gave some Scooby time to WB (which sucks, because they cram so many commercials in).
Scooby-Doo is likely to be the last holdout with Looney Tunes, finally being abolished back to Boomerang. However, very few people get Boomerang. To solve this solution, I still think CN should separate into three different entities and make them all as availible as CN - in fact, they should all be availible as a package for the same price, or just slightly more. It isn't even that much trouble - taken as a total, turning on whatever software and running it overnight is less time than I would spend watching commercials if I watched them on TV. Why would I ever?
Seriously; what value added does Cartoon Network provide?
I think that US anime is a coal-mine-canary for the whole audio-visual-content industry; which is an appreciable slice of the boysenberry pie which is world economic output. That which is a minor annoyance for dedicated geeks to do today will be routine for any consumer no more than ten years hence. So - are video pirates like me (Yar!) going to appreciably sour the audience for Cartoon Network's anime? Or, is it nothing but good fan recruitment for anime generally?

Note that I'm not against anime, I just personally don't give a rat's flea-bitten ass about it. In any case, 90% of what CN broadcasts are reruns; I'm sure that viewership of reruns is where cartoon network gets most of its ad revenue - even for CN original programming. Space Ghost and Dexter's Lab, although available from Kazaa, haven't yet reached the penetrance of Tenchi Muyo, so I'm not tempted to just watch downloaded versions instead.
Obviously, to the extent that people have a fetishistic preference for television over downloaded viewing, that will provide a boost to TV even should the computer read your mind and fetch whatever you want to watch days before you know you want to see it.
Personally, however, p2p really has damped my interest in CN anime offerings - pretty much completely. For shows that I like but don't feel the need to watch as soon as they're newly broadcast - Space Ghost is a prime example - I'd prefer p2p as well, if they were widely available. I think this is a trend.
re: value added-
CN's editing - I prefer no editing at all - is "value added", if you like it. Services that CN does for society generally by broadcasting anime don't count as value added because they don't enrich the experience at the particular time that I watch the anime. To the extent that my friends might watch the same episode, whereupon we have something to talk about, I suppose that that qualifies as value added. I don't think that it is going to compete with p2p as technology improves, suffice to say.
Legal = value added? I'll just disagree philosophically. Sticking it to the man = value added
Re:Other Cartoon Network Programs are nice, but... (Score:1)
That's probably true about the reruns, but I think it has as much to do with the format as anything else. Given the number/frequency of CN shows they run, it's not surprising that they're going to run low on content. Animation is more time-intensive to create than the average syndicated sitcom after all. "Very few cartoons are done live, Mr. Simpson. It puts a terrible strain on the animators."
I think you're right, but what you're really talking about is video (or content) on demand. p2p is just one possible mechanism for delivering it (although right now it is one of the most attractive). Tivo is a step in this direction too. Obviously, it's going to be much more attractive to watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it than to be tied to static content decided on by broadcast execs. The real question is who is going to control what is made available. The attraction of p2p over the other delivery mechanisms available right now is that it puts this control in the hands of the end user.

CN I don't have to put any effort into watching it, if you buy anime, download it, or rent it it takes a higher cost in energy than switching on the TV.
There aren't any hard numbers, but every anime fan I've ever met either had started liking the stuff young from TV or else picked up the habit from a roommate or Signifigant Other. So without seeding the next generation there won't be anyone to convice roommates or SOs into watching anime.
Since CN has been doing the best editing of any production company translating into english for TV they're doing a big service. Unfortunately they aren't going to keep on editing shows in-house from the last article about CN I read. A real shame if they end up cutting more scenes because the producer doesn't want to paint bikini's on the characters etc.
