  • I nominate Richard M. Stallman for best dressed, because it's not the clothes that make the man.

And who were those people who patented streaming media sales? I nominate them.

    --Alex
  • Not only does she dress well, but she has an awesome comic as well. After Y2K [after-y2k.com] is the funniest comic I've seen. It is in color (and usually animated), and appears daily. Unfortunately there's no award for "Person that keeps hackers spirits up so they can continue coding."
  • And .... when she does decide to get dressed up she does have some really good dress sense...
  • Deserves the cluestick with a nail thwack.
  • Best Dressed: John Carmack in "After Y2K." He looks SOOO pimp at the Geek Rehab clinic.

Patent Bully: This is a tossup between Amazon.com for pushing around bn.com and the guys in charge of the LZW Algorythm for pushing whoever they can. Also, I'd like to nominate the DVD Control Association for using crypto to limit the number of DVD Hardware vendors. This is not a good application of Crypto.

Domain Bully: To either AOL.com for trying to push around aolsucks.com, or to Etoys.com for their threats (and legal action) to etoy.com.

FUD: Without question, I nominate Bob Metcalf, Credited with the creation of Ethernet, for his article about Linux's "Open Sores." How's that 30 year old technology treating ya, Bob?
  • I nominate Amazon for the Big Dumb Patent Bully.

    You know the reason ;)
  • I nominate myself for best dressed. I am the only one on slashdot that wears a tie everyday and i add my own personal touches (Old Navy Performance Fleece for example).
  • My "Best Dressed" vote is going towards Nitrozac from After Y2k. Leather boots.....
  • I agree. I don't think Amazon can be beat for Big Dumb Patent Bully even if it is unoriginal.
  • I nominate Ceren, the BSD "Daemon Girl" who appeared at COMDEX. With red leather pants, a trident, a red leotard, and cute little horns, she was the star of the Linux pavilion....
  • For a picture, see http://www.gci-net.com/~users/f/fluke/comdex/bsdgi rl1.jpg
  • The Big Dumb Patent Bully HAS to be Amazon. I'll second that nomination.

I'll nominate for Domain Name Bully WhatsHappenin.com for their silly lawsuit [wired.com] against QuePasa.com. The internet is NOT english only.

The Cluestick award should go to 2600 Magazine [2600.com]. When will they take down the "Free Kevin" crap? Not only did Mitnick ask for a bunch of the delays in his case, HE PLEAD GUILTY. Biggest media punt of the year.(puts on asbestos underwear)

I nominated for everything but Best Dressed... hmm... maybe Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee?
"This is the nineties. You don't just go around punching people. You have to say something cool first."

  • Has to be the US Government, if they hadn't messed with NSI in the first place we wouldn't have to worry about it and deal with this lame shared WHOIS database where you have to enter specific servers just to get detail. What a waste of a good thing. Gaz
  • Amen. Pick a first name, append a .com, .net, or .org, and do a whois. You get NSI. Pick almost any cool idea for a domain name, they are already there. For example: bigcheese.com, everything.com, ospf.com, opensource.com, etc etc etc. From their website: Network Solutions' ability to scale with the tremendous growth of the Internet is unparalleled: While it took four years to register the first one million domain names, it took 11 weeks to register the one million names leading up to the six million mark. http://www.netsol.com/nsi/index.html
  • Maybe this is not the biggest fight, but the most stupid patent is the Y2K "windowing" patent [slashdot.org] by McDonnell Douglas. A nominee for the Big Dumb Patent Bully category. Has the patent already been cancelled, by the way? (see USPTO Takes Second Look [slashdot.org])
  • Dvorak might occasionally come off as being unsympathetic to linux and open source software, but at least he thinks about what he writes before he publishes it. A child flipping a coin would have better success predicting future technological trends than Jessie.
  • Blarharharhar, I can top that with ease...I can venture with a reasonable confidence that I'm the only patron of the venerable Slashdot who wears a skirt every day.
  • NullGrey: "My "Best Dressed" vote is going towards Nitrozac from After Y2k. Leather boots....."

You took the words from my mouth. But , yeah!, Nitrozac for BEST DRESSED
  • Very simple. Jenni on Jennicam(in the Slashbox), nude. No one can beat that.
  • Sorry to break it to you, but you're not the only one on Slashdot that wears a tie every day. I wear a suit and tie every day, though on Fridays I give in to casual day and wear just a jacket and tie. And of course I never go out without a hat on.

And I'd never be caught dead in anything from Old Navy.

    cjs

  • sometimes I wear a kilt.....
  • Top coat and tails.
  • Big Dumb Domain Name Bully -- Network solutions...the seem to be the root of all the problems. They could always use it as a prepayment for microsoft.
  • I belive that I am the only choice for best dressed; I won't repeat my reasons [slashdot.org], but I will add that I will personally bake the aforementioned cookies myself. They shall be unlike any cookie you have tasted before, and oh you shall like the cookie.

oh, that and the fact that none of you really know me, and it would be silly and fun :-)
  • The ZD net interns.

Allow me to be one of the many, many people to nominate the
Ziff-Davis (ZD Group) [zd.com] in it's many forms.

Their particular style of "rip and read" journalism, and complete
lack of objectivity over the years, has earned them the respect
and honor of only the most "clue starved" trolls all over the
world. It is my belief that this perverse propagation of
Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) puts the ZD Group among the
front runners in the race for a firm twack with the
    /. Cluestick.

More to the point, I would like to nominate the hard work and
dedication of the many ZDnet interns who (like so many sweatshop
workers in a Nike factory) tirelessly toil to cut and paste
microsoft press releases into Jerry Bursts' article of the day.

ZDs' blatant pursuit of mediocrity makes them a prime
candidate for The Cluestick Award for FUD in Journalism.
