Yep, that's the crux of it. Social media networks often deprioritize / limit posts that link to external content, simply because the networks don't want their captive audience to leave.
I think Facebook doing this is a good thing, because it means all that's left is the crap fake news. Makes it really easy to determine - if it's only on Facebook, it's fake.

I seriously get news from facebook, but I don't depend on it for news.
