Japan Airlines international main cabin seats run 17-19" wide, depending on the particular airplane. Most are 18" or better.
American Airlines international main cabin seats run 16-18" wide. Most are 17".
I'm about to do a TPAC hop on a JL 787-900. Seat width is 19", pitch is about 31". AA's seat for that hop is 16-17", pitch 31". To get 19" width, I have to pay almost twice as much and sit it Preferred Economy. Yes, I get a few more inches of seat pitch in PE, but
Or just... make the seats bigger for everyone and space them further apart.
When I can get a plane from the UK to Spain for under £40, not including airline tax, paying the airport itself, etc. *without even trying*, you could take less passengers on one plane and charge slightly more and get MORE overall custom.

The middle seat will remain the same width. The other two seats will be made narrower. Voila---a wider middle seat.
