I'm absolutely stunned by the results of the current poll.

Bible/Holy Text is more important to /.'ers than the Constitution? Not that I'm disagreeing (I chose bible, myself, being a good little Christian boy), but I'm shocked that there were so many religious-types in the community. I figured I was part of a minority, especially at how religion gets flamed and hazed when posted.

I'm pleasantly shocked :-)

And I have been thinking about a slashdot-clone weblogger with a christian spin on it. Tech news with a christian view? I guess it might be more successful than I originally thought...

  • I think that in this 'modern' society, people simply express spirituality differently than, say, their parents did 30 years ago. People don't do to church/synagogue/etc because it's boring, they don't want to dress in stuffy clothing and they don't want to sing hymns. People don't go to 'Bible Study' because it is dull and boring. Yes, I have done these things (the Christian ones) and speak from experience.

    But even so, this does not make people less spiritual or the Bible less relevant to them. Going to a place of worship, I think, is just a subset of spirituality.

  • I'm sure you've had enough politics/US History to have heard the term 'silent majority'. It exists. Maybe not silent, maybe not a majority, but it exists.

    Unlike our current President (and a former candidate for VP) most people keep their religion to themselves. True, somewhere it says that Christians are supposed to go and spread the Gospel, but not everyone believes that shouting it at the top of your lungs and having a Jesus fish on the car is the way to go.

    Anyway, I was a bit torn, so didn't vote.

    That's a surprise to me, too. However, people are beginning to develop an appreciation for spirituality in general, these days. Even marketers and tv producers are recognizing that. They are always trying to figure what is "cool". They are even getting heavily paid to figure it out. At one time, family values were cool, thus the tv show "7th Heaven". Atheists, and /.ers are in the minority. I am still surprised at the poll results, though, even if only one person came in here and stuffed ballots.

    I must say, though, that the real surprise, to me, is that you claim to be a good little Christian boy. I'd never have guessed. I think that it's because I mixed you up with fmaxwell. He is an atheist for sure, unless he is lying.

    I realize that Atheists are also greatful for children, but still, it doesn't seem characteristic of them, in *my* opinion. Your mileage may vary. So, when I saw that you announced your baby, I wondered to myself, "Who is this guy? And who is he trying to be?".

    I guess, if you are a Christian, then it could explain why I enjoy reading your journal. Plus, it could explain why you like Windows. ;^)

    Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been thinking about how to deal with it for such a long time. I read the troll HowTo, and it gives advice on taking a conservative right wing Biblical approach for each trolling. That concerns me because they'll give real right wing Christians a bad name. Each time an atheist encounters a troll, the atheist brings out his tired old tools and arguements.

    I think that that would be a great idea, and I would visit every day. There is one, actually. I saw it listed as one of the sites that is using slashcode. If I recall correctly, it's being run by someone up here in Canada. Anyways, when I last visited, it didn't have too many visitors. Maybe, you could work along side of him, and/or use his site?
    • On a slightly unrelated note, I made my .sig because too many people on /. would try to make us *prove* that God exists or that history happened a certain way. Well, nobody can prove anything, scientifically speaking. That's the nature of history. Since you can't repeat the specfic event, you can't prove that that happened at that time. You can repeat the *type* of event, but not the actual event. To "prove" that something happened, we need another tool.

      I just thought that I'd share a bit about myself.

      Well, you are wrong. I am very greatful of my child. Just because I don't force my delusions on my kid does not mean that i don't love and am happy to have him.

      That concerns me because they'll give real right wing Christians a bad name.
      Right wing xtians give themselves a bad name. Esp the ones who go about saying how athiests don't love their childern.

        Well, you are wrong. I am very greatful of my child.
        As I said, I realize that Atheists are also greatful for children. But alas, that's not good enough for you.

        Who said anything about forcing anything on your kid or on mine? That's *your* claim--a wrong one.

        Perhaps you understood it to mean that, but I didn't say that. And I never would. You have taken me completely out of context. However, next time, I'll try be clearer.
  • I read this journal entry before I clicked the poll, and I was really worried for a minute! I'd have to say, it's not nearly as bad as you make it be. The way I see it, sure, the Bible beat out the Constitution by 1% (14% and 15% currently), but it also only has a three percent lead on Picture of CowboyNeal in Hat, and it got it's ass seriously kicked by the Bill of Rights (a cool 23%). What I'm saying, is, 15% really isn't much so don't get all excited. Religion is doomed to obsolescence, and everyone knows it =)
  • I found it to be a very pleasant coincidence that several people on my friends list, who were added because of something other than religious belief, happen to share the same belief in God/Christianity.


    Although perhaps its not all that ironic. After all if you believe strongly in freedom, and the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence/Constitution/Bill of Rights, well, its not really that great of a leap from that to being a Christian.
