Journal Zirnike's Journal: Cribbage and other things 16

I went to my parent's place for the weekend. My sister was supervising some work that needed to be done for drainage (she's a civil engineer), and I figured I would hang around. I also needed an oil change.

Taught my dad how to play cribbage. I had the best scoring run during the play... I can't remember the exact sequence of plays, but I scored a 4 point run, a 6 point run, and a go (11 points) on one string. Dad got last card, though...

I seem to recall a bunch of people complaining about how the Big Dig is a huge drain on the resources of states everywhere. I recently found this, which is interesting in general, but includes:

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:
1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)
4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)
7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

Which kinda disproves that whole thing.

I don't want to lose track of this post. I think it's amusing. Anyone want to join my religion?

I'll continue the trend of topic hopping... this is funny. Seagull president.

Does anyone know why I bother with reality anymore?

Cribbage and other things

  • The thesis of the blog entry is the "to the victors go the spoils", but I don't think that is really borne out by the statistics. The states receiving more proportional dollars tend to be the less populous ones, while the most populous states are well-represented in the "bottom" ten. Interestingly, Texas is just out of the bottom ten (at #37). I see this as a misuse of statistics. The Tax Foundation report [taxfoundation.org] cites some factors that contribute to the relative amounts. I would also like to see the absolute
  • Fun game! I love it.
    • Me too. I try to teach people how to play... that, Go, and Fluxx.

Still working on the strip varient... Not that I'll find anyone to play...

There are online versions of cribbage. I used to play.

      • Hmm, for the get nekkid quick version, could remove an article for each point scored by opponent. Or maybe just on the last card.
        • That would be way quick... on a good hand, it would be one hand (I mean, look at the play over the weekend... 11 points in one hand, and I hadn't even scored that yet... I don't wear 11 peices of clothing in the winter, even if you count shoes seperately for left and right). While I've never had the chance to participate in a strip game, I think anticipation is part of the fun.

On the other hand, using the 'wins' (i.e. one article for a win, 2 for a skunk, 3 for a double skunk) would take too long. Ma

          • Nah...every ten points, your opponent loses a piece of clothing.
          • How about one article of clothing per hand played? The one that has the least points in the hand loses an article of clothing? I mean, how many hands per game are there, on average?

I'm going to have to suggest this to the SO... (we're pretty equal when playing cribbage.)

            ^_^

            • "The one that has the least points in the hand loses an article of clothing?"

That sounds fairly reasonable. Count the play and the cout for the total? What about the crib, though?

"I'm going to have to suggest this to the SO..."

Hrm... I think you should do a teaching video. :P

              • I hadn't thought about the crib. Hrm. Lemme think about that.

I dunno about the teaching video. I would bed that the SO would start playing cutthroat, because he is a minimalist when it comes to clothes. (2 items, shorts and t-shirt only) He would be heavily outweighed in number of items.

                ^_^

                • "I would bed ... the SO"

Much more Freudian with the elipsis. :)

that's the thing about all the strip games... women have a natural advantage. On average, a woman wears 4 items of clothing, and guys wear 3. During the winter, a guy might add a t-shirt, but the woman would most likely add a sweater.

On the other hand, nude women are more fun to look at then nude men, so maybe it averages...

        • Strip cribbage is fairly simple. You play a normal series (race to 5). In the event a skunk, the skunkee (or skunkees if playing 3 or 4 handed) lose an article of clothing. In the event of a double skunk, they lose 2. The clothing can also be used as a "best of 7 scoring system".

General rule of thumb for any strip game is 4 pieces of clothing:
          - socks/shoes (for the less timid, this can be eliminated and go with 3 pieces)
          - lower body coverings (pants/short/skirt)
          - upper body coverings (shirt
          • I'd rather see underwear top/bottom seperate for the ladies. Maybe shoes, etc. for the men? a bit unfair. In order, maybe, top, shoes/socks (men), bottom, bra/top underwear (women), bottom underwear?

And you meant a win is one, a skunk is 2, a double skunk is 3, right?

            • nah, you can use it as more of a scoring system. best of 7, 4 pieces of clothing, winner gets to stay clothed and see the loser nekkid, best of 9, winner gests at least one full game of nekkid opponent.

For skunk scoring, it's a play on how we play cribbage for money. Wins mean nothing, but skunks cost $10, double skunks cost $30. Learning to play with my grandfather and his cronies led to a quick learning curve. (money games, not strip)

          • I used to play texas hold'em along with other games such as go fish and battleship, but haven't in a while. Too busy with school stuff. :-(

I've noticed several design suggestions in your code.
