Journal srussell's Journal: Macenstein clones

What I love most about Slashdot is the Mac fanatics. They're a lot like religious fundamentalists, and there are enough of them to be a constant source of humor.

Take, for example, a recent comment I made in response to a /. story about a new MacOS. In the story, the author made mention about the fact that none of the Apple rumor sites were talking about the new technology. In my post, I commented that the rumor sites don't post "real" rumors any more because Apple has a history of slapping rumor sites with cease-and-desist orders when they're close to the truth. I didn't make this stuff up -- Apple has always leaned heavily on their users. Microsoft hurts their users through sheer ineptitude; Apple actively tries to hurt their users through litigation. In any case, the comment was marked "Flame-bait", proving once again that there are a lot of people out there who don't bother to look up the meaning of the words they use.

It did make me feel better about helping my mother-in-law convert from Macintosh -- which she loathed with a passion that I rarely see in people who know nothing about computers -- to Windows. It also prompted me to adopt a new quest: save one Mac user per year by converting them to something else. Windows users are usually either helpless or misinformed, but Mac fanatics are ill, and need help. What is really needed is a Betty-Ford-style clinic, or maybe a deprogramming intervention network.

I can't save the world, but maybe I can do good and save a couple of people from Macitis.

Anyone can make an omelet with eggs. The trick is to make one with none.
