Journal dutky's Journal: Apropos of google-hacking

I was a bit peeved today to find out that a google search for my name didn't turn up my web-page. It turns out, at least in part, that the problem was in the search. I searched for the string "Jeffrey Dutky", because that's what I call myself, but it appears that I wrote my page using the name "Jeff Dutky" because that's what I'm usually called by others. The search using "Jeff Dutky" turned up my web-page in the top three results.

I still don't think that's good enough. I think that my personal web page ought to come up as the fist hit for my name, rather than some random usenet posting I made recently. I can understand why references to me in CaTB might outrank my personal web-page, but not usenet posts!

So, the question is, what can I do about it? I've pretty well ignored the recent discussions of google hacking, not to mention the O'Reilly book by the same title, so I'm not too sure how things like this are done. I know what just about anyone of an overly geeky nature knows about pagerank, but it's all generalizations and handwaving.

So, this is part of my half-hearted attempt to improve the page-rank of my page. I have no idea how long it will take, or if it will even work, but I suppose it's worth a try.

To do nothing is to be nothing.
