What the hell is up with first posts?

I just don't get it. Did there use to be a contest back when /. was young?

I cannot fathom the person who anxiously awaits a new story so they can race to get first post. In what universe could a person view this as an accomplishment, and/or feel any sense of success at all?

Truly baffling.
