Journal mcgrew's Journal: Nobots Chapter Fifteen 3

Like I said... OK, that aside. I was wondering why I can't watch over the air TV on my phone? I mean. it has a radio.

Then I realized -- not enough room for the antenna. Microwave antenna are tiny, TV antennas range from six inches to a meter depending o if UHF or VHF. Duh!

Then a couple years later KSHE is advertising this NextRadio app that lets you hear local FM radio without streaming. Huh? How did they do that? FM is right between channels 6 and7 on the VHF band. that's at least a meter's wavelength (I haven't done the math). How the hell?

It seems they use the ear bud or audio cable wire as an antenna. I'm impressed! Now, the next phone I buy can I watch channel four on it?

  • My Nokia N800 had a built-in FM tuner that only worked when the earphone cord was plugged in and that was back in 2007. I know it wasn't the first to do that because it was a feature in one of the chipsets included in the device.

I never knew anyone actually used this feature.

I'd use it if I had it, my only working radio is in the car. Of course, with the TuneIn app I can get most stations in the world, but according to KSHE's "NextFM" commercials there would be less battery drain.

Of course, KSHE is bankrolling the app for obvious reasons -- streaming costs a radio station more than broadcasting thanks to the disparity in fees.

Is around 3 meters wavelength. A headphone cable is 1 to 1.5 meters long, which makes a fairly decent receive antenna for that.
