Note: This does have a very minor spoiler for Return of the King in it. But, if you haven't seen it by now, you deserve to hear some spoilers :-P

Saw RoTK for the second time this weekend. Now, am I crazy or do you feel the same way:
When the Rohirrim leave camp on their journey to Gondor for war... do you have this strong urge to go into battle with them? For the glory and honor of defending your king?

Or am I just crazy (not that I'd be surprised that I'm a bit insane....)

Other news:
The check engine light seems to have just been a vaccum tube problem (a tube that has suction... not the old electronic piece replaced by the transistor). Was under $100, so I had them also do an oil change, and replace the serpentine belt that was kinda worn down. Then the wife got excited about not having to spend much so we got our first kitchen table, which is really nice (solid oak).

I'll be probably buying my new computer tonight, so I'm pretty pumped. I'll write a journal about the machine and the deal I'm getting (with a link if anyone else is interested) later tonight.

Oh, and there is an innuendo contest in bethanies journal (look at my reply).

    A friend saw it for the third or four time this weekend and said that his want to do that keeps getting stronger.

  • It makes me have the urge to rally troops to go to war on my behalf, and although i'm not well enough to fight, i'd at least make them give me a bow and some arrows and some bandaids in case i managed a warner brothers moment or two. And there would be much, much burnination, for i would insist upon a catapult.

    • Your mom doesn't want to see it? I saw ROTK with the family and had tons o' fun - my mother had the most fun of all as she has been a die-hard fan since the books came out.

      I bet some Fan of yours in Boston will respond favorably to your JE! (if you were in san francisco, claudia and I would surely take you - not a date as we are attached, and more Punk than LOTR-Geek, but what can you do?)

    1) I disliked Aragorn's Braveheart speech.
    2) In the books, Merry and Pippin don't cower away in battle, they're hardcore warriors.
    3) They missed Aragorn looking into the Palantir
    4) They missed Gandalf owning Saruman
    5) They made it look like the end of the movie was at hand when they faded out at Mount Doom and the screen was black for 6 seconds. Same for after Aragorn's coronation ceremony.
    6) They made the army of the dead look evil and creepy.

      My biggest beef was the whole way they dropped the king of the nazgul. In the book, Merry stabs him in the back with his elven blade, which is why it killed him. In the movie, they did the whole "Woman power" thing that just really lamed it out.

        Ummm...actually, the movie shows Merry stabbing the Witch-King in the back of his leg, before Eowyn stabs him in the face - just like in the book.

        In the book, the only reason we know it was Merry's Barrow-Blade that struck the true killing (disenchanting?) blow is because Tolkien's narrator-voice offers a little afterthought on the subject.

        Plus, Eowyn's "woman-power" speech is in the book - "it is no man that stand

      Yeah, that was a little cornball. But he gives some similar speeches in the book.

      The real problem is that Theoden's speech is a tough act to follow (big time).

      Ummm...IIRC they lead the charge in the final battle before the Black Gate. Ditto - in Fellowship - against the Nazgul on Weathertop, against the cave-troll, etc. etc. ad nauseum. If Pippin cowers during the battle
      • You didn't notice that they left out the Mouth of Sauron??? (No worries, he'll be in the EE too)

        ARGH! I got into an arguement saying I swore it was in the book (kinda like an avatar of sauron, right?) at the black gate and everyone else disagreed. Are you for sure that he'll be in the EE?? Or just a hunch?
  • I think ROTK was generally good, but I have some issues with it. I was ready to go after the first "blank screen" (I think after the coronation). I think that would have been a fine ending.

    Here are some of my thoughts- warning, I started reading the books, but got bored. So most of my thoughts come from the uneducated movie-goer perspective (purposely dumbed down in layman speak):

    - Too many battles. The battle at the big white castle was pretty cool, but most of the other ones felt tired (exception: huge

      Those who saw the old animated ROTK [imdb.com] (don't see it, it sucks badly) will remember that part. I was wondering for quite a while when Gollum would finally bite his finger off.

      I agree - excellent battle scenes. Particularly the catapults.

      Arwen (Liv Tyler), Rosy ('chubby but cute hobbit chick'), and Eowyn (the blonde haired chick that was all over aragorn):
      In the book, the "Arwen/Aragorn love story" is basically what Rosy was in the movie. You see her in the first book, and at the end they are married. They wanted to hype it up a bit, I suppose, but it kinda felt a little flat. And Eowyn (this may be a bit of a spoiler for the special edition), her love story is the ONLY ONE explained in any detail in the book, but

      • I didn't quite understand the deal with Frodo and Gandalf sailing off with the elves into the sunset. Sure, the time of man was coming, but why didn't Sam or any of the other hobbits go along with them?

        I've tried explaining this a couple times. I'm not good at it at all. I can't remember if there was a 'specific' reason why Frodo left, but he was extremely miserable after the adventure.

        Frodo and Bilbo both get to travel to the Undying Lands because they were both Ring-Bearers.

        • Sam DOES go, but after Rosy dies (I think I read it in the 'timeline' section of the appendices). From what I remember, Gimli and Legolas set out together in a boat across the lands, but not to the grey havens...
        • Hmm. The three Elven rings were born by Elrond, Galadriel, and -- strangely enough -- Gandalf, so they double-qualified as ring-bearers. I wonder if Radagast (or Saruman) got to return to the Undying Lands.:P

            In the ROTK novel, when Saruman is killed his spirirt or shadow or whatever leaves his body, looks to the west and then is blown away. So no he doesn't return to the Undying Lands. Of course in the movies he hasn't been killed, and I don't think he will be killed in the extended edition either, so who knows.

            Actually there were two other wizards in addition to Radagast (I forget their names) who went into the east. The appendices never really say what happened to them though I think it

              Was this in the appendices? Saruman was not killed in the Scouring but rather driven away once again.

            The third elven ring was originally born by the Elf Cirdan, the shipwright. Cirdan gave it to Gandalf (Mithrandir in Elvish) to support him the war with Sauron.

With the departure of Sam(he leaves after Rosy dies as has been stated elsewhere) the third age(transitional) officially ends and the fourth begins.

          Arwyn becomes mortal to stay with Aragorn, because she has that choice as a descendant of Elrond the half-elven(whose brother is Aragorn's descendant).

      But, the Bengals fouled up something aweful, so the steelers game had no point except to stop Jamal Lewis from hitting the record. He failed, and the steelers end up with a better draft pick. I'm not upset in the least. Here's hoping Chris Perry or Eli Manning will be in a Steelers uniform next year.

        Eli Manning and Ben Roethelsbergerifficexpialadocious will be taken by the Cardinals and Chargers (possibly not in that order). I can't think of two teams that so desperately need QB help and two QBs who are more destined for NFL franchisedom.
