Journal JobCenter's Journal: Job Board, December 16, 2003 1

Job Board, December 16, 2003 There is a new section, Projects Wanted, to help out anyone looking strictly for contract work. This section debuts with listings from m0smithslash and Ethelraed_Unraed.

The Positions Wanted section has three fewer listings; one (m0smithslash) has moved to the Projects section, and two have landed new positions (coincidentally, both in the Seattle area). See below for more details.

SlashChick highlights the Employees Wanted section, looking for a sysadmin to help in her web hosting business (simpli.biz). Counterpane is still hiring (based on the latest Crypto-Gram, dated yesterday), as well. I have not had time to update the majority of listings in this section, however, so it will probably be useful to click through to the specific corporate listings.

blinder's employer, the Seva Group, is in desperate need of J2EE, ColdFusion, and C#/C++ developers in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area. See the entry below for details (I'd add an internal link, but it does not seem to work).

An unidentified individual has recorded his experiences interviewing with the NSA. Very interesting reading; thanks to the person to provided the link in a JE (sorry, but I've forgotten precisely who posted the link). Warning: this is a fairly hefty PDF, and will take a while to download over a dialup connection. I think that it is worth the effort, however, and may be of use to anyone applying for a position where a security clearance is required.

Lodragandraoidh's JE about how to distinguish yourself as a computer professional is still recommended reading. Sometimes changing your outlook, even a little, can make a big difference to your job search.

Saige is going to work in Seattle. Congratulations! Her entry has been (happily) removed from the "Positions Wanted" section.

Xerithane has also found work in the Seattle area, though not (apparently) with the same company as Saige. This senior C++ and Perl programmer is off the market for now. Sorry, HR ladies!

If you have submitted an entry, and the availability (either position or employee) has changed, please let me know. The process of reviewing the listings is an ongoing one.

The "useful links" have been moved to a separate journal entry, due to increasing size. Look in the JobCenter JEs from October, 2003; there have been no updates since then.

Positions Wanted. The following individuals are seeking employment. Each listing contains a link to a comment that mentioned the individual's availability, as well as a link to their user page. Please contact these people directly, by e-mail (if they provide a contact address) or by replying to the comment.
  • RevMike has experience with enterprise financial systems, using Java, J2EE, PL/SQL, Pro*C, Perl, and XML. He is located in the New York City/Long Island area.
  • intermodal is also looking for work in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. He does tech/administrator work for unix, linux, and all versions of windows. He also has Software QA experience. He would also be interested in any fire department that is willing to provide training; he already has experience in that area, being currently with a volunteer department.
  • buffer-overflowed has a variety of experience, including C++ development, Unix and network administration, and help desk, on-site, and desktop support. He is currently located in Charleston, WV, but may be open to relocation.
  • heliocentric is an experienced admin and IT support person in the Harrisburg area. He is particularly interested in working in the information security area, where he has had some past experience. He would also be interested in a position in the Reading area.
  • aridhol is a programmer with three years experience in C, C++, and Java, located in Winnipeg. He is a Sun-certified Java programmer with a CS degree from Camosun College in Victoria, BC.
  • Jellybob is looking for a junior sysadmin position in southern England. He has had five years of experience supporting Windows boxes, and three years supporting Linux on both servers and desktops. He also has four years of PHP/MySQL development for web applications and community-based websites, and has a working knowledge of Python. He is willing to learn anything else required.
  • Judg3 is a Windows jack of all trades, specializing in enterprise system and application management and deep level troubleshooting. His strength is taking an assignment and bringing it in on-time and under-budget. He's also at the power-user level with FreeBSD and Linux. There's more detail in the referenced comment, I'd strongly sugest giving it a read. He's looking in the Milwaukee area, land of beer and sausages (mmmmmm, Usinger's), and home of former car salesman Bud Selig.
  • Interrobang is looking for work as a technical writer. She has two years of direct experience, a Master's degree in Language and Professional Writing. Check out her additional qualifications here. She's currently in London, Ontario, but is willing to relocate (preferred destinations Toronto, the Kitchener/Waterloo area, or New York City).
  • ces is an experienced Unix system/network admin. His experience includes a variety of Unix-based OSes, as well as networking hardware. He also has some admin and troubleshooting experience with Windows. Check the linked comments for more detailed examinations of his credentials. He is looking for work in the Seattle area.

Projects Wanted. Developers or others looking for non-permanent, contract work. Where there is any overlap (i.e., anyone who is looking for full-time permanent but willing to accept contract), the listing will appear in the Positions Wanted section.

  • m0smithslash is looking for supplemental work, particularly projects that he can do at home. He is experienced in Java and C++, as well as a variety of other areas. Check out his journal entry for more specifics - it's one of the best brief summaries of experience I've seen.
  • Ethelred Unraed is looking for projects in Web design and screen design. He has a very good level of experience with Web development, and speaks several languages (English and German fluently). Read his reply to the last Job Board, and check out his web site (referenced there) for more information.

Employees Wanted. Pretty much the same format as Positions Wanted. When submitting for this section, please include a link any on-line job listing that is available. I have not had time to go through and re-check the corporate listings for this edition, so please click through to the corporate sites to check the real availability of each position.

  • SiliconJesus works at Digex. The company has job listings posted here. The current positions listing includes Unix Tech Ops - Internet Systems Administrator II (Washington/Metro), Tech Tier III, IT HelpDesk (Washington/Metro), and Systems Security Operations Engineer III (Washington/Metro). These listings change, so take a look for yourself.
  • The original position that Servo posted in his journal has been filled. However, Arsenal Digital still has some open positions.
  • FortKnox needs experienced J2EE coders, experienced project management, or experienced business analysts. The experience is an absolute requirement. These are located in the Cincinnati area.
  • According to blinder, his employer, The Seva Group, has urgent openings for J2EE, ColdFusion, and C#/C++ developers in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area. Applicants with security clearances are particularly sought; even a lapsed clearance might be helpful, providing it can be reactivated. The J2EE developer position was listed earlier, and requires 3+ years of experience including Websphere. It is at a client site in the Baltimore area. ColdFusion developers with professional experience are also urgently sought. Read the post for more details. If you are interested in any of these positions, reply to this post or e-mail JobCenter (I can forward the mail to him). Since he just got an unexpected raise, this might be a company worth looking into.
  • jawtheshark works for Fujitsu Consulting in Luxembourg. Fujitsu has several positions available, including experienced Documentum (enterprise content management) experts, data architects, and entry level IT work. E-mail CVs to slashdot(at)jawtheshark.com; he will direct them to the proper destination. There are positions open in both Belgium and Luxembourg. JTS recommends Luxembourg, for certain financial reasons. I've been reading his journal for a few months now, and I have to say that it sounds like a nice place to live.
  • wowbagger is doing his part to see that your job search is not infinitely prolonged. His company, Aeroflex, has four openings for senior DSP engineers in the Wichita, Kansas area. These are highly specific qualifications; if you don't have the experience, please do not waste their time. The positions are: Sr. Software Engineer, Sr. Software Engineer - Embedded Systems, Sr. Software Engineer, and Sr. DSP Engineer - Wireless Communications.
  • According to Blackneto, CIBER is a decent place to work. Particularly inasmuch as they seem to compensate consultants well. Their job postings are available online. They also have a referral program, so contact BlackNeto if you plan to follow up on this.
  • eglamkowski's company is also hiring. There are positions in Georgia, Kansas, and Virginia. The positions are primarily for software engineers, but there are some others open. Contact him directly by e-mail, or I would be glad to route a message to him.
  • Counterpane Internet Security (Bruce Schenier's company) has several openings, including a Sr. Unix Administrator (Cupertino, CA), a Security Analyst - IDS (Chantilly, VA), general Security Analysts (Chantilly, VA), a Sr. C Software Engineer (Mountain View, CA or Chantilly, VA), a Sr. Java Software Engineer (Mountain View, CA or Chantilly, VA), and an SOC (Security Operations Center) Manager (Chantilly, VA).
  • SlashChick is looking for a sysadmin/programmer type to help her grow her net hosting business. Looks like a good opportunity to get in near the ground floor of a growing business, and a challenge to boot. She's looking for a highly qualified Unix admin, with a willingness to admin some other OS systems (including Windows), and with good knowledge of PHP, shell scripting, and Perl. In the San Jose area, starting part-time/contract, with the expectation of being full-time in six to twelve months. Read her JE to see all of the qualifications.
  • loucura!'s company, Knights Direct, is looking for a programmer to start in January, in St. Louis, Missouri. They are seeking someone with a related degree or two years of work experience, with particular emphasis on back end web services and database design and development (MySQL/PHP, Java/JSP, SQL Server, XML/XSLT are the cited skills). Check out the reply to the last job board for more details.

The boilerplate:

Thanks to everyone for supporting this effort. If you have an issue with your listing, let me know ASAP (e-mail or IM might be best). If you have a position, are seeking a job, or have comments about the format, please post a reply to this JE. Suggestions are always welcome, by e-mail or by comment. I aim to have every opening or job need mentioned in a JE within 24 hours of my becoming aware of it. Subsequent JEs will repeat entries from prior job boards that are still open. If you have an item listed, please let me know ASAP when it is no longer current. I would love to be able to post a success story or two here!

Entry-level MIS position in NYC hospital, advanced skills in MS Access an absolute requirement (i.e. programming VB/VBA, writing own SQL statements, etc.). Hospital is in process of upgrading legacy systems, so experience with client-server apps and/or mainframe systems a plus (however, this will not compensate for lack of Access skills).
