Journal Xerithane's Journal: Hands of doom 20

3 weeks, and my projects tarball is 700k. About 200k is images. Do the math, and I am surprised I produced that much. Most is not auto-generated by anything (90%) so I have produced, in my estimates, about 400,000 characters in 3 weeks. That is a lot.

My wrists let me know that tonight. You can't index-type when coding, unfortunately. So, I'm curious what remedies you all can recommend. Unless you are buying, new equipment is out of the question. Also, typing less is right out.

Cheers, 70% feature-complete.

  • Lets have a potluck for how many lines of code your first release is. Not a hell of a lot you can do after your fingers start hurting, buy some braces, dont wear them all the time, if your not already using a split keyboard you can't really convert now, but switch when you have time to adjust your style. The best advice I can think of? Type slower.

It's broken out into code, templates, and sql blocks. Then I have library code and module code, so it breaks out pretty evenly.

70% of the code is finished, lightly tested, and working, and it's 4K. I'm expecting it to top out for version 1 around 6k. Templates are 1500, and that will grow to probably 2,000 - 2,500. SQL should stay under 1,000 - probably 800 lines or so. Static CSS is about 300 lines a pop, with probably about 10 cs
  • One pill (200 mg?) 3x a day. I've dealt with lots of pain from computer use -- it's due to the inflammation. Ibu is an anti-inflammatory. No need to megadose -- just take it consistently, and it'll help more than you can appreciate.

And as often as you can, take a rest -- elevate your hands and make little helicopter circles with your hands. Looks silly, but who's gonna be watching? It helps.

Due to previous "problems" I have an amazing tolerance to ibuprofen. I usually have to maintain 800mg doses 3x for it to take effect. I had to take it for years, and it works just to relieve a little bit of the stiffness but that's about it. After 3-4 days of constant dosage
      • Is it available when you ask for it, even if it is not on display?

Over here (in the UK) 800mg tablets are available, but the pharmacists are pretty reluctant to give you them, unless you can explain why you need them.

I know things over there are completely different, but it is worth a try.

        Chris.
      • If you're looking for anti-inflamatory, I use Alleve frequently (back, neck wrists).

      [makes chopper sounds at desk]

      What are you looking at?

  • Take lots of breaks (even short ones to stand up and strech are good). Do regular finger/hand/arm/shoulder streching and range of motion exercises. Get a massage 1 or 2 times a week. Be sure you are using a proper typing posture as well. (back, neck, and head straight and in line, arms at 90 degrees and level, wrists in air and not resting on desk or keyboard, etc.)
  • Googling for this has gotten me nothing (damn common words!) ... could someone enlighten me as to what he's referring? Is this some kind of alternate typing method to alleviate wrist strain?

    • Typing with just your index fingers, or even holding a pencil or something and typing with that :)
      • I beleive the traditional phrase is "hunt and peck" for that brand of typing. Mind you, there are skilled hunters and peckers (pun moderately intended) that do not have to look that much as they are quite familiar with the layout, but there is still a degree of watching as you type.

There is no hunting though, and that's the difference. Index typing is done from pain, hunt and peck is done from lack of skill :)
      • And here I thought it was some kind of high-tech new-fangled type-forever-pain-free system developed by someone w/ lots of letters after their name. Hrm. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • If so, it might help to put some kind of a pad under it. There's a nerve that runs between the bones that is prone to getting inflamed when the forearm is resting flat on a desk surface. I've had this problem, and a relatively thin (0.5 inch, relatively dense) foam pad helped a lot.
  • they're about $16 a piece. i have four of them, two i keep at work, and two i keep at home. it has a splint to keep you from bending your wrist as well as padding on the heel of the hand to make sure you raise your hands high enough for when you're typing. they're comfortable and not too bulky. my wrists were starting to hurt like hell almost all the time. so i tried a smartglove. it worked well enough that i got another for my other hand. now i have my wrists back. ars-techinica has a review here [arstechnica.com].
  • I have a TENS unit. Legally only available via perscription, but a little googling will find you several onlin retailers willing to look the other way. My bad area is my left wrist and I keep the sides of it shaved (normally I've got Robin Williams arms) so I can put the contacts on better. I have the kind without the sticky backs so mine are reusable, but don't always offer the best conductivity, so I hold mine on with a regular wrist brace found at the drug store. Put in a 9-volt and let it rip.

    Funny
    • I was mostly talking about new keyboards and such. I have a new MS Natural wireless keyboard which is nice, and don't want to replace it (nor can I afford it.)

I also just went out and dropped $30 on IMAK SmartGlove's. So far, I can say lots of good things about them, but I'll use them for a couple of days before I make a full verdict.

Thanks for the heads up on the TENS units, that is something my girlfriend may be able to get, as well...
      • I have these el-cheapo gloves and braces from Wal-Mart that kinda work. . . . but I'm not sure if that is just becase I use the computer less when I wear them because typing is awkward. . . . or if it is a mental affect where I think they hurt less because of the braces.

        I don't know.

I think I will give these IMAK gloves a try. They look less obtrusive than my current solution. And given that this week involves (so far):

        50 hour work
        +
        10 hour school
        +
        5 hour deer butchering
        +
        5 hour Mario Party
