Journal CleverNickName's Journal: Set Phasers to Kill 25

Some mothefucker calling himself Bruce Cook (myspecialworld2001@yahoo.com) thinks that it's okay to misrepresent me and my wife:

I had opportunity to go to a Star Trek Convention recently and Wil Wheaton was there. He has always been one of my favorite actors and I so looked forward to meeting him. Anyway, I did not know he sold his autograph. I bought a picture for $5 and, when it came time for me to meet him, he told me he needed $10 for the autograph. I was brought ,by my brother,in a wheelchair and it was explained we did not have $10. But,instead of showing compassion, his wife, who was there, said, "then wheel your crippled ass out of the way,we're here to make money, not give out charity!" I looked at Wil and he said "You heard her,now fork over the 10 or get the hell out of here!"

It's bad enough that this bastard made up some stupid lie about me. That I can ignore. Anyone who knows me or who has spent fifteen minutes at my website can tell that this is bullshit. But he crossed a line when he lied about my wife, who is the most loving, compassionate, caring and thoughtuful woman on this planet.

Bruce Cook, if you're reading this, you have one chance to set the record straight. Nobody tells lies about my wife and gets away with it, you son of a bitch.

These situations suck. You know what the best thing to do is (ignore them and go on with life knowing that they are the asshole in the situation), but this is a case where being the better man and ignoring it is almost impossible. Gut reaction wins out over cool level-headedness.

I looked at the Yahoo user info page for this idiot, and got the impression it was a throwaway account.

There is one interesting and rather, um, diplomatic reply in the Yahoo group thread, tho:

I can't help but think the writer of this post used a bit of embellishment in describing what took place with Wheaton. You must understand that celebrities like him and Noah have to make an agreement

Understandable. And a damn shame that with celebrity comes the added bonus of jealous individuals doing whatever they can to earn a buck or a bit of fame from your name.

I can't imagine that this one lone idiot could really affect you for more than the time it took to write your JE. I don't personally know you, but I do feel confident in saying that 99% of the Geek Community knows that you would never intentionally demean any person.

Dood, it is obvious that this idiot is only trying to get you to rise, er lower yourself to his level.

Why give the worthless scum the time of day? Not having ever been a celeb, I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a fishbowl, but isn't the best way to fight these fsckers is by ignoring 'em?

They're probably like a hydra anyway: cut one head off and two grow in place.

Anyway, give your wifey a big hug and tell her how much you care for her. Otherwise the terrorists will have won.

    • I agree. This guy did it for attention, and he got it. I'd delete everything you posted about him and let it be.

Just some loser with too much time and not enough attention. I don't think ANYONE would ever think you, or your wife, would ever treat someone like that.

I'm afraid there is some confusion. That happened at my autograph signing (this happens so often, you see). Some dork in a wheelchair gave me some sob story about not having $10, so I whaled on him. Then he got out of the wheelchair and ran off.

I guess he thought I was you or something. Maybe it was the latex Wil Wheaton mask I was wearing.

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

    • Then why did you pass out pictures of Wil and spell the name wrong? The copy you gave me said "B*itch You suck, Will Wheeting" or maybe "Best of luck ..." I don't no - you're handwriting is really poor.

Anyway, I'm trying to get into movies, but no luck. Can you give me a brake? I mean, I tried sending that guy $45 and weighted for him to call me back with a movie offer, but no dice.... thanks.

You're one and only fan, Stan.

Dude... I don't know you personally and I've never even *seen* you in real life but everything I've read on WWdN and your comments on /. are completely against what this dude is saying. Hell, I can't think of any celebrity that spends anywhere near as much time or effort on his/her fans.

I think there are a lot of people out there who forget that even though someone might be in movies, TV shows, politics, or whatever other position of public interest, they're still a person and they deserve the same amount of respect as anyone else.

I say you e-mail this guy and tell him that you did read his comment and that it did upset you and ask him for an apology in the same Yahoo thread. If he refuses or whatever... well, I'm dead set against the use of lawsuits except in the most extreme cases but this time I'd say screw the phasers... Lawyers set to slander lawsuit!

  • he's a troll.

that appears to be the only message he 's posted on that forum. If yahoo's search system for their groups didnt suck, i would check and see if he's posted in any other groups. somehow, i think i'd find drive-by trolls are the only posts he makes.
  • The whole intrigue behind autographs in the first place. I can partially understand the desire to meet "celebrities" but waiting in like for hours or paying money to get someone's autograph, no matter how famous they are seems like a waste of time to me. Unless you want to sell it but even it would be easier and a lot more profitable, albeit unethical just to forge stuff and throw it on ebay with a fake COA.
  • Anyone who knows me or who has spent fifteen minutes at my website can tell that this is bullshit.
Wil, man, there are thousands of people out there that are going to hate you and think you and your wife and your dog and your goldfish and whatever else comes in contact with you are horrible evil people. Nothing you can do will ever change that. But you know what? THEY DON'T MATTER!
