Journal jeffy124's Journal: If not for modern conveniences, what would you do? 9

I submitted this as an Ask Slashdot. If it gets accepted, I'll consider removing it.

Back during the Northeast Blackout in August, something got me thinking of all the things that require electricity and other modern conveniences, and what I would be doing with my life if things like computers weren't around. I eventually forgot all about it. But when Hurricane Isabel hit, I lost power at home for about a day, giving me great boredom outside cleaning up the yard. My grandfather, who sells and repairs antique electric model trains, is still shut out of work with lost power at his home. This brought up the idea again of what if we didn't have electricity? What would people be doing? I'm curious to see what fellow slashdotters would be doing if not for the industrial revolution and the information age. What would you be doing?

Update 9 pm EDT Monday: Rejected after about a day's worth of consideration.

If not for modern conveniences, what would you do?

  • who sells and repairs antique electric model trains

What type specifically does he deal in?
    • I'm not entirely sure. Lionel is one brand name we works with, but that's about all I know.
      • I think heliocentric is asking about what scale of train. (e.g. N or HO, etc.)

e.g. are the train cars about two inches long, about five inches long, or about a foot? (these are not necessarily the only options)

  • Just like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood.
Pay sucks. Hours are awful. But I'd be in movies...
Seriously, though, probably a farmer. Did landscaping for a while. Love working with plants.
And Isable gave me newfound appreciation for power. Especially being on a well.
  • ...as the hordes of hungry, sick, and dying people kill each other to grab the last can of Potted Meat Food Product from "Lucky's."

There are way too many people to survive "off the land" without the help of modern farming methods, which in turn rely on manufactured fertilizer, machinery, and distribution networks.

You are invited to use my plan, provided you stay away from the one on Hwy 6:

    1. High tail it over to the bank [thecityofhouston.org] and make a withdrawl
    2. Drive like a bat out o' hell to Sam's Club (or costco) on Hwy 6.
    3. Weld
