Journal LinSux's Journal: If you think Linux Sucks, Raise your hand. 1

It's an operating system written for zealots by zealots.

I wanna hear both sides of the fence!

Honestly MS has a very stable OS, now, and a huge apps base, but yet people keep defending the nevercanbe underdog, Linux. Why!?

  • I really don't know. I mean, Windows is -the- desktop operating system. OS/2 had its chance. Linux had its chance. Various real unixes had their chances. Macintosh had its chance. One way or another, whatever the method, however questionable they may be, microsoft is now on top. I don't see pretty much *EVERY MAJOR CORPORATION* in the world dumping MS to go to an unsupported (RedHat support is not support. 14 Year old Billy Parker down the street is not support.) operating system that has been established less than 5 years. Windows has been around and maturing since 1985, Built on DOS which was around a few years before that. UNIX has been around three times as long as your average slashdot user. Linux is a toy. Arguably its a good pair of training wheels to see how using a unix feels.. kinda. One of the *BSD's is arguably better. Linux can't even choose BSD vs SysV.

I got as far as I have in the computer industry (I'm in my early 20's, started as a computer operator at 18, jr admin by 19, now sr. admin) by lots, and lots, and lots, and LOTS of hard work, and not letting my ego get the best of me when it comes to the systems. I let people tell me when I was wrong, or when there was a better way to do something. I listened. I watched, I read. I put in 16 hour days for weeks at a time to make sure I was the best that *I* could be. It's paid off. I value certifications because the industry values certifications. Windows 2000 is -the- best OS out there I have ever seen for an enterprise environment. The integration is unparalleled. I see the browser, media, etc all being "mated" with the OS as a good thing - Most Users don't want to know what a MIME type is, and i certainly have better things to do than associate 15 file extensions by hand. (Hello, Linux! oh, wait.)

I keep an open mind. If linux ever becomes enterprise-ready, I'll re-evaulate my stance on it. But right now i see very few applications for it (-real- thin clients, sendmail server (if you use sendmail.. don't get me started)) I'll have my MCSE completed by the end of the month. I already have three sun certifications (SCSA 7 & 8, SCNA 8). For those linux guys who would say certification isn't neccesary: It isn't, but it's sure nice when you're competing for a job :)

    (end of rant)

Anyone can make an omelet with eggs. The trick is to make one with none.
