  • I'm considering putting in some more memory (currently 256MB) so that I can do heavy Photoshopping and Cinema 4D work during the winter months. Also, it would probably make it quieter to boot, as it would spend less time paging stuff to/from the hard disk.
  • I'd use it for my various and sundry word-processing and spreadsheet needs, Internet stuff, and editing & burning the family videos to DVD for posterity.

Oh, and probably some games, too, but I forget what letter it was.

Don't have one anymore, but when i did, I did all of the above options except the code slinging stuff.

While I prefer my workstation, I find I end up doing the majority of my coding on the road - airport, hotel, client site, living room. Not a pair 21" monitors, but it works in a pinch. A follow up question would be what do you run as an HTTP server?

    C) Internet usage
Ah yes... I'm hooked on this net stuff. Here I am on holiday, overlooking a lake, surfing the web while my bride and child are still snuggled in bed. Sweet coffee, a CDMA card that has better coverage th

  • A.) With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, my wife and I have been transcribing her recipe index cards into my web based recipe database. I'm also thinking of writing a book this way. Much better than typing. :)

B.) C, Bash, Perl, Python, CMD in Windows XP, etc... Oh yeah and some HTML. Although I hate HTML since it's so damn complicated compared to the above.

C.) This one goes without saying: Web, mail, IM, irc and ssh.

D.) I've done it, but it really sucks for FPS games. Currently I play the following game

  • I'll be getting a laptop soon and it will mainly be used for document type stuff and internet around the house (wireless, of course!)

  • A,B,C,D,F - litte bit of everything.

I actually have two laptops. This one is my work PC. Right now it's in the docking station hooked to a 19" monitor, optical mouse, full size keyboard, barcode reader, USB color scanner, and the network of course. I have an 802.11a/b/g card that I can pop in and undock, so I'm free to roam around the buildings while maintaining my slashdot fix... er... my network connection. I also take it home and my wireless card works there as well (I have an 802.11b WAP at home,

    • well, I'm a Gentoo user (I like portage's style and functionality), and if it weren't for the installer's package management frontend, I wouldn't dislike Debian much. Well that and Debian's IRC. I hate that too. But as a distro, it's pretty decent. Mandrake is decent, but their constant "we're bankrupt, we're not bankrupt" makes me not want to lean on them. I guess my preference is to lean towards non-commerical distros, but I must admit that Mandrake's installer is pretty slick.

      Post-install though, p
  • I use my laptop mainly for wifi, e-mail, maybe 1/2 of my browsing, and 1/3 of my coding. I have a workstation at home and soon I will have a workstation at work. My laptop (IBM X31) allows me to use the same e-mail and im wherever I go, while also making sure I always have a Linux machine close at hand. I couldn't imagine checking my mail without evolution+spamassasin or iming without the spell checking and logging of GAIM..
  • I have been owner of laptops since the 486 days. I'm at my 3rd for the moment. I have all done that over the years on my laptop. My first laptop was back in 1994: a shiny blue TFT (that was very very rare back then) laptop (without CD-Rom), 320Meg harddisk, 486DX/2 66Mhz, 8Meg of RAM. A true beast back in the day. I was a student, I used it for development, writing papers, games (the "serious games of back then), no internet back then though. It has run a variety of OSes ranging from DOS 6.22, OS/2, W
  • I have used my laptop for all of the above, though it's no longer capable of Serious Gaming. I runs Quake just fine, and StarCraft or WarCraft II, but WCIII is so slow I can't function.

Other than that, I use my laptop for just about everything. It is my third; all PowerBooks. I've done all of the above listed, plus using it to read books, 3D rendering, DTP, image editing, video editing (with limited success), and watching DVDs.

My laptop also serves quite a range of utility functions. Having 802.11b, 10/10
  • I can't find a link to this one company I read about near 9months ago. They made a full speed P4 or Athlon XP laptop that had a full ATI card (not a low power mobile version) and other beefy stats. It also came in custom high quality paint jobs. They were advertised as portable AutoCad / graphics stations and were a bit pricy ($2-3K) but had the stats to show for it.

I can't find a link and I don't remember the company name or product name. Anyone heard of them?

  • The price of VTxxx terminals is INSANE. I bought a few P100 laptops, loaded Slackware or Win98 on them and have a GREAT terminal to use, and its lighter than the DAMNED CRTs.
