Journal pzilla's Journal: Common misconceptions in /. environment 1
I've got tired of watching people posting on slashdot getting insightful remarks about common misconceptions because the general public doesn't know any better. Here are some of them:
* There is not a Second World anymore. That was a name given to the group of communist countries. Now that USSR no longer exists, this term became deprecated. And these names say nothing about the development level of a country. The HDI (Human Development Index) is a much better measurement for that purpose, but still not perfect.
* Yes, poor people in third world countries need computers, not just hygiene, food, medicine and clean water. This will probably sound chiché, but they need to adapt to this new information age. With computers, they will be educated about their reality and demand changes in society. If the digital exclusion problem is not addressed, instead of being just poor people, they will become beggars for eternity. There is no specific order in attending someone's needs, you can and should address them all at once.
