Journal luzrek's Journal: Home multi-media machine update 2

Well, I've installed Mandrake 9.1 stable on the thing. After some fiddling, not really knowing how the device driver stuff works, I've figured out that I can get the Gyration mouse to work every other boot by having a normal USB mouse plugged in on every other boot, weird. The other problem I've discovered is that the gyration mouse can get dizzy. This manifests after turning quickly while holding the Gyration mouse by a constant drift in one direction regardless of how the mouse is being held.

  • You probably need to edit your XF86Config file--it's usually in /etc or /etc/X11 The section you want is called "InputDevice". This usenet thread seems to have the values you need. [google.com] If you don't understand the config file, man XF86Config may help.

Often doing a search (especially in Usenet) will turn up solutions for linux. I just used "Gyration mouse" linux at groups.google.com [google.com].

In the other thread I found, the guy had the same problem as you. It was in a Mandrake group, so maybe there is something wrong

    • To me it is pretty clearly a mis-identification of the Gyration mouse somewhere more fundamental than the XF86Config. First, I can use the keyboard which receives using the same USB antenea thing. Second, when the Gyration mouse isn't working "cat /dev/mouse1" doesn't show any inputs. It does when the gyration mouse is working. Finally, Mandrake's control dohicky says it is an unidentified device which is a keyboard (if it doesn't work) or a keyboard and a mouse (if it is working). Since it kinda work
