Journal ParticleGirl's Journal: SARS 8

Poll(ish type thing):
Are you worried about SARS?
Do you know what SARS is?
Has it affected your life in any way?
Do you expect it to?

I keep being reminded of 12 monkeys.

My students have largely never heard of it. Then again, a good half of my students barely realize that we're in a country at war.

SARS

  • A) Nope, but this cough I'm having is getting worse. That of course is due too much smoking.
    B) It is a respiratory disease originated in Asia. It resembles the common cold in infection rate, but is deadly in some low-ish percent range (like 10%). Nope, I forgot what the acronym stands for and I'm too lazy to fire up google. (Which would be cheating anyway, right?
    C) No, should it?)
    D) No.

    • The difference between Twelve Monkies and SARS is that Twelve Monkies was deadly in the highest percentisch ranges. So very infectious (airborne) + longer incubation time + very deadly => Twelve Monkey virus. Not that I'm waiting for that one ;-)

However, now they find that it's also very infectious-- airborne (see that quarantined apartment block in Hong Kong where it spread through the ventillation) --and related the the common cold. And the incubation time is something like 3 days to 2 weeks, right
  • Are you worried about SARS?
Sorta, but I really hope the smart people working at the CDC and the local Biolab here in Winnipeg [hc-sc.gc.ca] can find a treatment for it.

Do you know what SARS is?
Yep... Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome... scary stuff, and my mom (being asian) is scared because mostly asians have been affected...

Has it affected your life in any way?
Not really... and I hope it never does.

    Do you expect it to?
Well if it really is airborne and actually gets here in Winnipeg (other than in sealed

Oh, that is the offical name for it? I have just heard it being called killer pneumonia.

Once you said that, yah, now I know the rest of the answers. :)
    • ... just sittin' and watchin' for the time being.

And thus, the latest reality based television show was born.

I'm going back into my cave now.

      PS, get online shadowspark!
  • One thing I suggest. Don't read (or watch the miniseries) The Stand (by stephen king).

    Are you worried about SARS?

Yes and no. While it doesn't sound like much fun to have, I think I'd likely survive catching it.

I'm more worried about other people's reaction to it and inconvienience due to efforts to contain it.

Do you know what SARS is?

Yep, a really nasty big-brother to the common cold.

Has it affected your life in any way?

    Not yet.

    Do you expect it to?

It might. I live in Seattle so there is a good chance of it showing up here in a big way due to all of the trade with Asia this are

I've noticed several design suggestions in your code.
