tomhudson's Journal: What if Google doesn't "turn off the tap" on Google+ invites

I still show having my original 8 invites left, despite sending out a bunch. Others have said they've sent out 75 or more, with no limit in sight.

Google had as much time to prep the infrastructure as they did the software. What if they're ready to go head-to-head with Facebook today, that if half a billion people joined in the next 2 months, they're set up for it?

It would be another case of doing things different, just like when webmail was a piddling 20 megs and they offered several gigs. In this case, a limited test, then straight out the door, to catch the competition flatfooted,

Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? Only they know, and they're probably monitoring the situation very closely, to see if there are any showstopper issues, but I believe their goal is a critical mass before the beginning of the fall school session, and the best way to do that would be to keep the steamroller running.

It would also devalue any facebook IPO.

Facebook+skype? Google+ has video hangouts, plus google talk. Yes, facebook has games. Google has mail, maps, etc. +1 for google.

Also, businesses are far less likely to block google than facebook. +1 for google.

Centralized social networks

As much as I want to love Google and all of its services, why are we rooting for them? It's just another centralized social network like Facebook except they're more likeable. Wouldn't it be more positive to have something like Diaspora or the system with Slashcode you proposed some time ago?

Unfortunately, the sheeple are going to have to get good and fed up with centralized systems before they opt out for a completely decentralized one. Given the current climate, that's maybe a decade away.

What is more likely to happen is that social networks are replaced with the network itself being smart enough to connect any two or more people anywhere, any time. Then the concept of a "social network" as a "site" simply goes the way of the rotary phone or IPv4 addresses
