I saw Monster's Ball yesterday. Everyone said it was a 'great flick', and, of course, we all remember the wailing, bumbling Halle Berry when she won the oscar for her performance.
Well, I think it was a sham.
The movie wasn't the worst I've ever seen; its about racism and complex relationships. Regardless, it wasn't anything oscar worthy. Sure, Halle gets naked (and lets face it, she's hot!), but her only "oscar winning" performance is the crying scene in the hospital. After that, its her being depressed and sleazy.

Rent worthy? Sure, if nothing else is in. Otherwise skip it, it isn't that good.

    Well, she did manage to act like she was hot for Billy Bob Thornton. Angelina Jolie couldn't pull it off for long.

    On a related note, Swordfish starring John Travolta. May go down in history as a movie whose only redeeming quality was Halle Berry taking her top off. I think they paid more to get her to do that than the movie grossed.

    I really don't understand why they would screw up a movie about doing Hallie Berry with all that other crap.
  • The move was acclaimed not for just individual performances, but as a whole for realistically portraying lower class individuals of different races. You completely missed the point of the movie, it focuses not on race relations, but the parent-child relationship. The experience of losing their children was the glue that bonded the interracial couple together. It wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it was certainly in the top 1% of movies released two years ago.

    But yeah, it was an attempt to be all moody and deep, but mostly, it was weak. It was one of those deals where you have a group of people being shit on, rather than a complex set of relationships developing as a result of life stuff. But no, lots of shit happens and they kinda make due with it.
  • This was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. I felt that the story lines were so loosely put together that continuity was something better found in Penny Arcade or South Park. The dialogue was at best filled with college educated writers sitting around debating "What would a white trash racist grandfather say here?"

    I give it a good half star for the boobs.

      True...true. Also the strange, UTTERLY UNREALISTIC way in which Halle's character falls for the guy who killed her husband, then slept with her, and knew she was the widow. She knew he knew who she was, and she still FREAKIN went for it! My god, man -- it's billy bob for crissakes... blah!

        And her 500lbs son. I mean.. Halle fucking Berry producing a child that weighs 5x as much as she does? With a father that looked skinnier than Halle? Ok, lets go for another dose of unreality here.

        I work with Halle Berry's aunt, actually. When I first found out, it was desperately hard not to say, "Wow, are you embarassed about Monsters Ball?"
  • I don't think I've ever heard of this film. I thought you were going to talk about some B horror flick.

    How can I face that? She's butt ugly. We're talking like deformed Carrot Top kinda ugly. Why do people keep going on about how she's so "good looking" when to me "oddly shaped head" would be about the nicest thing I can think to say.

    Yeah yeah, to each his own, but still, I'd hope my views of falling out of the ugly tree and hitting every branch on the way down would run parallel with more people...
