Pentalobular

  • Someone has already put together a $10 kit to get around it [ifixit.com]. I like that the kit comes with regular screws to replace the pentalobes - as well as a screwdriver for pulling out said evil screws. I expect by the end of the month online retailers will be fighting for who can sell the screwdriver first for under $5 with shipping, and by the end of 2011 we'll be buying them at walmart.

And of course, by then I will have purchased a sum total of zero iphones/ipads/ipods for myself over the course of my life, s
    • It's just the entire philosophy behind it that gets me. I mean, they had to design and fabricate a wholly new screw head and drive to do this. Why? What reason other than you want to have to force people to only be able to use your service?

Why do you like them so much if they keep doing this ton you? I liked Apple when I was a kid, using their computers free at school, but when I had to start buying them with my own money I went MS and got everything done just fine.

Last year my best friend got an iPhone and I waited a while before I got one. I did not wait long enough, because we both discovered that they SUCK right after I got mine. Oh well.

I was understating it. I cannot stand Apple products, much less them. I've JE'd about it in the past, but basically I have not liked Apple products since about '93. My Amiga A1200 had a 14 Mhz 68020 and 2 megs of RAM. The Apple's I had to use were 60 Mhz 68040's with 8 megs of RAM, if not more. And my Amiga was faster. It just bothered me to no end that they had so much better hardware and crappier performance. Then I upgraded to a 50 Mhz

My first computer was Apple, a gift from grand parents. We had them at school too, but when it came time for me to buy my own I went to IBM compatible. The only reason I have an iPhone is because my best friend got one and still liked it by the time I needed a new phone. Now we both hate them. We are both frugal enough to only replace stuff when it does not work any more, but I may make an exception to that as soon as this ATT contract is up.

Did you notice this story is on the front page now?

      • Just shove the right size Robertson (square-head) screw driver into it. Jam it in good - it WILL unscrew :-)

I have yet to find a screw that can't be unscrewed with a bit of improvisation. It doesn't matter if I ruin the head in the process - screws can be replaced, or electrical tape/duct tape/glue/nail protector/elastic bands can fix it.

And don't knock the nail hardener trick - it's better than glue in a lot of situations where you need something to stick together but be able to "crack open again" wi

        • This is ture, but I'm sure it's also considering a voiding of any warranty that might be on it. I imagine the next step will doing away with screws at all and simply spot welding things together!
  • The dye pack will blow if you pry it open.

  • The word "pentalobular" immediately made me think of TMNT. :)
