When I was little, I often spent the summers at my grandparents' house. When I misbehaved, my grandmother would give me a paring knife and make me go out and cut a switch from one of the trees. I don't remember her ever using it on me, but I remember crying as I brought the switch inside.
I'd say that if she used it it was a 1, and if she laid it on the kitchen table and said "now you'd BETTER behave," that was a 0. So I guess it was a binary switch.
