Journal isorox's Journal: No +2? 13

Not got plus two for your karma? Same here.

Why? Slashdot's changed - have a look under "preferences, comments". See that box saying "Karma Bonus (modifier assigned to posts where the user has good karma)"?

If you value the opinions of good posters, set it high, +3 maybe. If you only like trolls, set it to -6.

I dont know why it doesnt default to +1 though.

No +2?

Comments Filter:
  • This explains much. Including the new "No Karma Bonus" wording on the post comment page, though I see that the wording is unchanged on the preferences page. So it really is a feature, not a bug. And, I suppose this also means an excellent-karma-person can get a full four +1 mods on their posts before the comment hits its limit.
    • But I thought the "No Score +1 Bonus" was always there?

I usually post at +2, but sometimes post at 1 when I feel that my comment is less insightful then others (and I want people to read the other comments first).
      • But wait, I just posted at 2 there... but today all of my other posts have started at 1.

        How odd...

I'll make this post at +1 just to see what happens.

This new feature might be for the good. If everyone with Excellent Karma post at +2, it only encourages the status quo.

I wish Slashdot had a place to discuss these new features of Slashdot.

        • But wait, I just posted at 2 there... but today all of my other posts have started at 1.
It depends upon what the reader (in this case, you) has set his own "karma bonus" modifier to. With the (new) default setting of +0 karma bonus, I saw both your posts rated at 1.

After switching my karma bonus back to +1, your first post was rated 2, and your second post (to which I'm following up) was rated 1 (because you did what you said, you checked the "No Karma Bonus" box).

CmdrTaco will probably post a journal entry about this in a little while.

          • But if you have your Karma Bonus set negative. . . Then somebody who is NOT using their bonus could score higher. Nifty. I think.
            • I'm thinking of setting anonymous coward posts to +1, and karma bonus posts at -1. This means every post is scored "1" originally. I can then choose to see posts that have been modded up, and ignore other posts. An anonymous post at default+2 is likely to be more useful then a karma whore's irrelevent post at default+0, although they have always had the same score before.
              • I actualy give +1 to all comments above 75 characters. Same overall effect, ACs are +2 (already set to +1)
              • I'm thinking of setting anonymous coward posts to +1, and karma bonus posts at -1. This means every post is scored "1" originally.
Not quite. To do this, leave your karma "bonus" at 0.

Then you won't see any difference in a post's score whether or not someone elects to select the "No Karma Bonus" box when posting.

      • Indeed, it was. The wording just hasn't been changed to match the "No Karma Bonus" checkbox below.

And I usually post using the Karma-based Bonus except on those very rare occasions when I just can't resist adding a jibe that I just know someone out there could treat as flamebait if I don't keep a low profile. ;)
  • And was resolved today, it seems. (see my journal for bug details :)
  • I've found far too many people leaving the +1 bonus on all the time. It should only be used when there's a good reason, instead it's used as a way to push your opinion over another's.

I've set my bonus modifier to -1, so now the problem goes away!
    • No, it should be used unless there's a good reason not to. The reason you have it in the first place is because you apparently post things that people find to be interesting, insightful, funny, etc. Unless you know you're posting something fairly unimportant, then there's no sense in not using the bonus.

      • I suppose this really depends on what you want slashdot to be.

If you prefer the "dinner party" environment, most stuff is less than important, but still fun/interesting to discuss, and anything offtopic is still interesting (ie: Top of thread should be marked offtopic, everything else is fine). Only if you are going to announce something really important, you get up, chime a glass and say it. But you don't do that often.

If you prefer the "legislative debate" environment, anything people say is directly related to the topic, anything out of that context or that is just a quip told to your neighbour is disregarded.

Depends on what you want slashdot to be. I like the first one. Neither is bad, but the root of the fact that certain trolls exist (for example) is because of the difference between those two environments, and the constant struggle between what slashdot should be. Of course, some trolls are just jerks in general.

        Just my two cents.
