No, I'm not going to break down what oil companies say that the $5 is spent on. What I do want to comment on is this:
Ike destroys a number of oil platforms
"It's too early to say if it's close to Katrina- and Rita-type damage," Mr. Herbst said.
There are about 3,800 production platforms in the Gulf, including 717 with full-time staff aboard.
The MMS says Hurricane Katrina destroyed 44 platforms three years ago, and soon after, Hurricane Rita destroyed 64.

I just want to say something here. If they are making net profits of upwards of $90,000/day in record profits, why can't they do something to protect their investments in infrastructure? A category 2 storm blows through that area of the country on a regular basis. Any company that make that stupid sick volume of profits could at least spend a little to make sure their processing plants won't be shut down every time the weather gets a bit nasty. Our government should fine them for NOT making their infrastructure more sound and secure. By the way, oil company profits are not just obscene, they are unimaginably obscene. Oil is the only business that profits from its misfortune. Ike blows down oil rigs and their prices skyrocket.
BP oil workers go on strike in England and gasoline prices skyrocket.
Be glad Bush won in 2000 or ketchup would be five dollars a bottle! Of course, I can do without ketchup, I can't do without oil and gas.
Bush and Cheney are oil men. They should be impeached for the treasonous acts of putting their business interests before their country.

I've been driving for 40 years and hurricanes never made the price of gasoline go up in the 20th century (at least between 1968 when I started driving and 2000). What's different now, except that we have two oil men in the White House?
Second of all, oil continuously makes a profit even in bad conditions because, as you just observed, Americans have created an environment in which they're dependent on it

Of course they have, don't be absurd. It's just that they were all blips, just like this one will be.
Maybe it went up a penny, but not a huge spike like this century; I'd have noticed. The only huge spikes before this century were with the Arab oil embargoes in 1974 and 1979. You say "of course they have", you're going to have to show me some damned solid documentation to get be to disbelieve my own memory.
