Journal claudia's Journal: Music Reviews for Y'all 10
Virgin only had three of the nine CDs I was hoping to purchase. I missed out on Suicide and Space Brothers and Archive.
The rating system:
10 run home and slap your momma
9 crawl on your knees for it. are you begging yet?
8 pee in your pants or skirt or kilt or lederhosen
7 unicorns. daisies. a Democrat Senate Majority Leader.
6 calm down, it's all relative. no need to drool yet.
5 steal it from Wal-Mart
4 steal it from an aquaintance who won't care it's gone
3 GDMFSOB. Whatever.
2 borrow it from someone you like and throw it out the window, for their sake
1 a very bad one-night stand who stalks you for eternity singing Whitney Houston tunes
What I bought:
Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights : 8 (it's an 80's thing)
Zero 7: Simple Things: 9 (lush. friendly. soothing)
DJ Shadow: The Private Press : 8
Autour de Lucie: to be reviewed (thanks PMF!)
Got suggestions?
You buy music at Virgin?! (Score:2)
Just thinking about those makes me shiver.
On the other hand, your rating system rocks!

The store in SF is not all that bad as far as crowds and lighting except if you're looking for a French electronica CD that might be filed under World --> France or Electronica. Customer service can be kind of iffy, but the people in the Electronica section seem to know their stuff. Plus, they actually have some good sales that beat Amazon. For obscure hard-to-find stuff though I always go Amazon.
My favorite though is Amoeba Records [amoebarecords.com] on Haight Street. OMFG. If ever in SF, it's a must-do. Everyone that works there clearly does so because they can't imagine not having music in their life. I'm really hoping they build up more of an online presence. Okay, yeah, now I'm feeling guilty for shopping at Virgin.

It was at Amoeba that I found many French titles recommended by Profane Motherfucker that have made for excellent listening whilst reading political websites. Sometimes they can be a pain in the ass with their attitude, but it's still worth it.

True. I used to be a regular customer of CDNow, too, back when there was precious little in the way of online music stores in the UK.
Now, CDNow has been swallowed by Amazon. Who knows, maybe they farmed out to Amazon because they don't have to pay programmers. Anyway, the search function sucks now. I like Amazon, don't get me wrong, but the old CDNow was better.
I stopped using CDNow when I found that Amazon.co.uk could get me most of the stuff I wanted, without the extra cost of shipping over the Atlantic, and without the risk of Customs slapping a charge on it if they were feeling in a good mood that day.
Then again, what the hell do I know. I get most of my CDs from stupid music clubs. That's how lazy I am.
Ugh! Tried those for a while, and gave up eventually, as it was very hard to find anything that I actually wanted to buy. Nowadays, I listen to the radio to find out about new stuff, then search online - a far superior arrangement for me.

SO? I'm 34 now. That's no excuse not to relive the glory days of your youth. Besides, now you can afford to buy music and keep a roof over your head!
In the last year, I bought
Grandmaster Flash's Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel (3 CD Box-set)
Afrika Bambaata Looking For The Perfect Beat
Heavy D & Da Boyz Heavy Hits
Big Daddy Kane The Best Of Kane
plus *three* Jean Micheal Jarre CDs (Oxygene, Equinoxe, Magnetic Fields).
Add that to my box-set of Steve Reich stuff, old Kraftwerk albums (including Autobahn!), Giorgio Moroder's From Here To Eternity), and my set of Mantronix re-issues (wish there were more of them out there!)
Track down those memories now, whilst you still can, and whilst you can afford to. Yes-yes-y'all!
