Journal haggar's Journal: What the hello is going on with Slashdot? 2

Is it me, or is Slashdot become a pile of hibernated molasse, i.e. did it really slow down to a crawl? It sure feels terribly slow in the past few days.

I don't see or didn't see any announcement that they would be doing changes to the infrastructure/servers and that we can expect problems.

It almost looks as if Slashdot had Slashdotted itself.

EDIT: december 24th (2002), by now most of the quirks have ended, but not all and not all of the time. I still get a timeout on Slashdot, from time to time, but very seldom. I still wish I knew what has been going on.

What the hello is going on with Slashdot?

  • Heh:

    BeOS runs on the IBM.

network works fine and was very painless. (i can browse /. and all); but there are a few things that does not:

    1) Video. S3 is shitty anyhow and I don't remember Be ever supporting them. I don't expect to get out of grayscale / 640x480 anytimes soon
    2) Sound actually does not play properly.
    3) needless to say, my Wireless PC card does not recognize (Dell TrueMobile 1150 - which is a rebadged Agere methinks)
    4) hotbay (swap out floppy for DVD, etc) does not function. maybe I am doing it wrong, though (need to unmount first?)
    5) I am really unsure about the modem... It uses a Xircom winmodem (yuck!) and xircom is not even on the list of modems...

besides that everything seems okay. the mouse and its three buttons are completely supported. The cardbus ports comes out okay too (but what I stick in doesn't). I can't swap out the DVD because I need to boot w/ floppy (no way to burn a bootable CD right now).

Dell mostly comes with Nvidia / ATI video card these days. It might work better on them... We will see. I do wish Be did not go under; sigh... Even though this was made in 2000, it's still lightyears ahead of WinXP and the like.

I personally wonder if RedHat will be much better, but anyways, that's a different story.

Anything else you are interested in particularly?

My machine is a IBM T21 - 2647-8AU if you need the specs. I think you can grab them off the IBM site with the above number.
    • Hey buddy,

thanks for trying. Just FYI, you can find all sorts of freeware and DRIVERS on bebits.com:

I just did a search for S3, and came up with these drivers:

      http://www.bebits.com/app/202

      http://www.bebits.com/app/2770

One of the two SHOULD work....

As for being off topic: I was, actually, once modded in a journal discussion. Besides, let me just ask you: did you not notice any slowdown of Slashdot at all, about 2 weeks ago?

It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.

Working...
