Did a little research, and came up with the following:
New accounts start at +1. Garner enough upmods, and karma bonus kicks in, making the default score for a fresh post +2. How many upmods will it take though?
Our first test case shows that the account received +2 status after 48 upmods and 2 downmods, for a total of 46. However, 9 of those mods were +1 funny, which do not impart karma, for a new total of 37.
Further, since archived comments do not detail mod breakdown, several upmodded posts may contain +1 funny moderations, hidden under other mods.
Still, at this point, I think it's safe to say that you need approximately 35 upmods to go from start to karma bonus. I'll do another account later on in the week and see what the comparison is.
