Journal SPAM: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise 20

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik." American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier. The incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy, which had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication.

    • They are too busy covering the latest Brittney and OJ shenanigans.

I suspect this is all a prelude to the 2008 Olympics, during which some think Taiwan will declare independence. If the shit hits the fan (and it will if that happens), now ruminated on how well the current administration will handle things (i.e. as well as a braindamaged bull in a china shop, no pun intended). Yep next year is shaping up to be full of interesting times indeed.

    • Sure it was... In the papers of one of those NATO partners! Thanks, Blighty...
  • The boat captain said "So sowwy, Wong ocean."

Seriously, everyone knows that diesel-electrics subs are a LOT stealthier than nuclear subs. You can shut down *everything* on a diesel-electric, and either just drift, or lie in wait on the bottom.

Seriously, they need to make subs that transmit whale sounds as they drift along to help mask any other sounds they might make. It would only work once, but as an added bonus just think of all the bad press the US would later get from blowing up random whales.

Which is important to remember when thinking about Iran, which has a handful of pretty modern diesel-electric boats.

I bet the head ASW officer in that carrier group got quite an earful.
  • Didn't this happen last year? Are they late off the mark or did it happen again?
  • So was the Navy using the active sonar that causes whales to beach themselves? This is quite bad. If that sonar wasn't used, it will almost have to be used now. If it was used and this still happened, then that's just really bad as far as detection goes.
