Journal Erris's Journal: UK Government Ignorantly Mulls Universal DRM 13
The BBC is reporting a new government threat to internet and software freedom:
The UK government could legislate to crack down on illegal file-sharers, a senior official has told the BBC's iPM programme.
... the technology necessary to track illegal file sharing would mean that "it is quite possible to know where it is happening and who it is happening with". The British Phonographic Industry was pleased at the government's tough line. Cory Doctorow described the idea as misbegotten. "It represents the opinion of someone who doesn't understand technology very well, and hasn't really thought through the implications of what he's promising. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's an actual computer scientist involved in digital signal processing who believes that you can accurately identify copyrighted works with any kind of reliability in a variety of situations," he said.
A former Communist wanting to put guards on all of those internet copying machines? Look out!

CNN did not do it's homework to have missed that one, and there's going to be more of that as other retailers blame M$ for their downturns. Zune is a miserable failure and has also been on firesale and XBox is a flash in the pan and probably represents more channel stuffing. When those birds come home to roost M$'s "diversification" hype will evaporate and all that
