Journal Jucius Maximus's Journal: Slashdot Damages My Productivity 20

The observations here apply to me, not you. I'm not saying that slashdot damages everyone's productivity. But it damages mine.

Basically over the past year I have noticed that I grades are dropping and I spend tons of time on slashdot reading/posting/etc and having a damn good time. Just look at my number of posts. But dropping grades are bad.

Last summer when I was doing development work for a company, I blocked slashdot on my machine via hosts file and my productivity jumped. Just the inconvenience of having to remove it kept me paying attention to my job.

And look at me now. I have a major paper due tomorrow and I'm writing in my slashdot journal. Damnit, I have to keep myself away from this place!

Slashdot Damages My Productivity

Comments Filter:
  • I'm just posting this here so we can be sure I'm not moderating in my own journal. :-)
  • The whole Web damages my productivity. It's a nice way to continue procrastinating even after I've sat down at my PC.

So do games, of course; I've see offices full of people playing Solitaire. What I really need is an old-fashioned electronic typewriter...

    • Games may damage productivity, but the human brain needs something to do. Typewriters and boring work was how stuff like World Wars 1 and 2 started. It's better to be playing a game where you're blowing the shit out of someone than doing it in real life.
  • I know *exactly* what you mean. I'm a former CS major (now doing English/Professional Writing) but I still can't break the /. habit!

It was kinda funny actually, a friend of mine and I were chatting online when he asking what I was doing:

Me: just using up this latest batch of mod point on /.
    Him: your what on what?
    Me: /. = slashdot.org
Him: (after loading it) oh my god...
    Me: what?
Him: this is scary. it's like a home base for geeks
    Me: Yeah, I know. It's home ^_^

Anyway... I empathise. I'll also add you to my friends list = )
    • "Him: this is scary. it's like a home base for geeks"

Heh, I know excactly what *you* mean too :-)

I only realised recently that the /. homepage would appear only as gibberish to non-techies. I mentioned it to a prof one time and she told me that she couldn't translate it!

    • Worse for me. I got addicted to Slashdot after changing my specialisation from pure theoretical CS (love programming, couldn't take all those theoretical bullshit) to Information Communications Management (which, at least in our non-descript but highly funded public university) is a bit of dark side (that's lit/art / mass communication) mixed with CS and computers in general. (See, I have this irritating habit of abusing parentheses; already becoming one of you Lit majors. Besides, most of my past posts have been on spelling and grammar, so...)

I blame my CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) lecture for this addiction. He was the one who suggested (informally, I assure you), that there's a certain tech discussion forum that covers my interests in Lego, fair bit of programming, astronomy, biology and physics.

Question: Can I sue him for lost time?

And oh, guess I'll add both you guys as friends. Helps to have a support group at hand.

  • I *so* know what you mean. Slashdot. The web in general. Games. It's incredible how you can improve your productivity if you don't use them. And at the same it's amazing how little you miss them. Then, again, when you return after a week or so... it feels sooooo good :)

You are right. Btw, here I am at 4 AM with a term paper due tomorrow (actually today.) Bah! I must get back to writing!

Just an update. I finished the paper at 6 AM, got to bed, and still made it to my 8:30 class.

On a related note, I am extremely relieved that it is the last day of classes. (Exams start on Monday.)

  • But then again, a day without /. is like a day without rebooting windows.
I mean, err.... I like linux. Really, I do...
    I run Mandrake at home...
    .......Runs Away!
  • I have slashdot as my homepage (have for a long time) and I've pretty much read every article on the front page since a year ago. I would like to break away from /. but I have this need to know every new gadget or program that comes up. I think I'll use rootprompt instead.
  • if you like drum'n'bass you must be addicted to dogsonacid.com :D
  • If you find a cure for slashdot addiction please let me know.
I got rid of my television about three years ago because of the massive
amount of time I wasted in front of it and just replaced it with the internet. I'v considered making a support group for slashdot addicts where we can encourage each other to go outside, get things done at work or college. Somehow I think it would just become another forum to compulsivly reload. Arrrigh.
