Journal Chacham's Journal: News: Oakland County, MI free Internet in Troy and Oak Park. 4

Oakland County, Michigan is aiming to go wireless, and has pilot areas in Troy and parts of Oak Park. In my case, it juts just above 10 mile enough to include my apartment. It looks like it follows 696.

I consider this bad news. Well, i love the fact that i'm included, but i know too many kids who will be at risk of bad influence by unfettered access to the Internet, especially with their computer illiterate parents none the wiser. I'm betting there will be a lot of noise made over this, and it won't be this easy to connect for long. There's more than one reason we don't let kids drive. One is because they won't be responsible on the road. The other is that simply, they require supervisions until they mature. The Internet is no different.

OTOH, this does call for a new wireless card for my laptop. I broke the last one because the antenna stuck out of the side and eventually got hit (enough times). The dream is, to take it to the park on a happy summer day, and doing some work at a table in the warm light (and enough shade to see the screen). Simple dream, eh?

awol parents will have problems even without the internet.

True, but non-awol parents will not. And giving them the internet is like giving them a car. Now, imagine you don't want to let your 16-year-old son to drive, because you feel he isn't ready yet, but will get there in a couple years. Then the state, in conjunction with the Big 3, decide a laptop isn't enough, and we must give a car to every child on their 16th birthday. While not completely analogous, i believe it expresses the point.

      On top of that,
  • How are these needing-to-be-thought-of kids getting online at all? Are they all given free wi-fi enabled laptops by Michigan, without any restriction whatsoever from the school or the parents?

I'm guessing from a previously thought of to be disconnected computer.
