Journal travist120's Journal: My adventure with Ubuntu 7.04

Through the many years of oddities and wonders, I have never come across a linux distro that could fit my computing needs. Distro after distro, I would find something else wrong. The usual case was that not one distribution could easily be configured to use my Linksys card. With no access to the internet, and no easy way of doing things without a trip to the ever so confusing NdisWrapper. I backed away.

Until I met Ubuntu 7.04

It was love at first site. Quickly I downloaded the beta version, ran a checksum on the file and burned it to CD. I shut off my computer, plopped in the cd as the computer was booting up and began to shake with glee.

The congos went off and I saw the application start up menu come into view, then fade away. I noticed two little bulbs in the right hand top corner of the screen. One bulb turned green for an approximate 3 seconds, followed by the bulb diagonal from it turning green. "You are now connected." I almost peed! But then there was a cheeky little devil. Turns out the hard drive I was using had some bad sectors on it, and my power supply wasn't sending juice to a slave drive. That little error I could never resolve, and I was in depression for several days due to the unsurmountable amounts of time spent trying to get it to work.

Finally, an idea. I opened up the case of my computer and unplugged the CD-RW drive (I have a USB DVD-RW drive that also burns CD's so I didn't really need it anyway.) I plugged the power into the secondary hard drive. Booted into Ubuntu 7.04. AND INSTALLED IT WITHOUT A HITCH!!!

Now, I have had my computer taken away from my parents (15 year olds never learn do they?) and am excited because now... I have the Official Release of Ubuntu 7.04
