Journal dalassa's Journal: Proud to be a feminist 2

This got me thinking.

Why do people dislike feminists? Why do women get sexist and harrasing comment on slashdot? Hell why do we get stared at in CS classes.
No I don't have an answer, all I know is that eventually you can be accepted as "one of the boys" but usually only if you act like one of the boys. Thats not quite a good thing.

  • Why do people dislike computer geeks? Why do guys get sexist and harrasing comment [ivillage.com] on iVillage? Why do men get stared at in Victoria's Secret? No, I don't have an answer, all I know is eventually if you kiss up enough one will accept you under the terms of a very restrictive EULA and the rest will then never speak to you again.
  • Perhaps the simple answers might work just as well ... and at least stimulate some discussion.

    Why do people dislike feminists?

Most likely because there are a select group of feminists who tend to react to the slightest perceived faux pas with what generally ends up looking like a flat-out attack, whether it is or not. Regardless of the intent of the response, or of the actions or behavior of the remainder who classify themselves as feminists, this group generally gives the word a bad connotation.

Why do women get sexist and harrasing comment on slashdot?

Men and women are fundamentally different. Interacting with the opposite sex often requires a different set of social skills which do not come naturally to many people, and which require use to maintain. Because so many men operate in a group where they don't have the opportunity to exercise these skills, they don't know how to relate.

Hell why do we get stared at in CS classes.

Biology and socialization. Women are frequently brought up (socialized) to conceal attraction to members of the opposite sex. Men generally are not. What's more, the majority of men tend to simply find women visually appealing, regardless of any sort of direct physical or chemical attraction. The same usually cannot be said of CS professors. ;)

But unless you naturally act like "one of the boys," you're not. You're you. Why not simply be accepted as yourself?
