Journal FortKnox's Journal: I don't see Multiply going away... 16

Sorry to all the nay-sayers, but I pretty confident now that multiply isn't going away. I already find myself going to that page before slashdot. I'd suggest picking it up, just so you have an ID there and are associated with it in case we don't come back.

Here's me as a starting person to be joined to. Make sure you give me you /. id when you join, though.

FYI - I've requested to the site a way to grab /. historical journal entries, and they are considering it (they already have this feature for blogger, blogspot, etc...). I'd also like to see cross-posting for those too stubborn to leave...

I don't see Multiply going away...

  • I have to say I am doing the same... I still come here, but only after taking care of all of my business on Multiply. Multiply seems better equipped to nurture a community than slashdot is, and it's a whole lot less buggy. That, and the site does not do a port scan after every comment post...

I'm still hanging on here for a little while, while there are still people here that haven't jumped, but my involvement here has dropped some.

    • My port scans ended when I resigned ad.doubleclick.net to the hosts file redirected to localhost. Oddly enough, resigning ad.uk.doubleclick.net to localhost also sped up The Register.

I'm curious though what the thought is on getting new blood into the circle though?

I've thought about that, and I don't think that will be a problem: they have tons of active groups there, and I am guessing people will start to friend others (who will show up as "friends of friends"; I have seen a few already), and *bing*, new people. It takes some getting used to, but I do like the new interface, and not having it break weekly is nice.

I have thought about that as well, and that's something I am not sure how will be answered. I suppose there will be some that will come based on outside contact with people already in the group, and I suspect there will be the holdouts here that draw them in. It certainly will NOT be as easy as wandering in like it is here, though, which has its pluses - so far, no obvious trolls.

  • Before declaring any internet service provider permanent. 2 years is the time it takes to burn through VC angel investor money. If a site makes it past it's first two years, it may become permanent if it secures additional funding. If not it will disappear soon after 2 years.
  • ...but I can't post during the day. Which is when nearly all of my JEs (other than the poems) go up. So when I have something to say, it will most likely be here. I may mirror JEs there at some point.

Is there any way to make the discussions threaded? The couple of longer ones that I am seeing in emails are getting a little confusing.

So I will want to stay networked there, but it will be unusual to see me writing anything.

      • Well, it was mostly curiosity - since I'm reading via the emails, I'm not going to see threaded discussions.

Unless something changes, I don't see myself lasting too long over there. The point of this exercise is participation, and if I can't do that most of the time I'm online, I'm not likely to pursue it. The friend thing may keep me interested for a while, but what's the use if I can't participate?

          • I hope to see you over there more. Maybe we *should* have someone set up a proxy, if it will help get folks like you and MH42 and others over there during business hours.

My involvement with Multiply is going to be down as well for that reason - that, and I'm getting busy with the band stuff...

    That's nice.
  • But I like Slashdot! :-\
