Journal Alioth's Journal: Amateur Mechanics: Epilogue 7

Sure enough, the spark plug wires were the entire cause of the rough running. Looking at the old ones, the insulation had more or less completely broken down on the spark plug end on two of them.

We changed the plugs as well as the wires, it's likely the spark plugs had been in the car just as long and were about due.

Amazing how much the basic tune-up stuff can get a car running right.
Replace the plugs and wires, replace the air and fuel filter, top the fluids off, check the battery terminals, and off you go!
For extra points hit all of the grease fittings and flush the radiator and add new coolant.

Fairly cheap to do and relatively easy on most cars.

Of course some people seem to think you don't have to do any maintenance other than putting gas in the thing.
    • Ummmm... What is this "Gas" thing of which you speak?

While in a high school a friend of mine stopped his mom from pouring radiator coolant into the gas tank. She had been told that she needed more coolant and, well, that was the only place she where to pour things!

      • Hey, do another JE about the NFL playoff situation. It's really interesting how you did so well on the NFC. But I propose it's finally the time for Manning to take one home. If Chicago is able to win the super bowl with such a week offense I will be sorely unimpressed.
        • Will do! I have a couple different dice "algorithms" with the dice that I'd like to try, so I might have several different scores to report;-)
      • That's funny until you realize that she probably votes. :-)
        • My friend had a rocky relationship with his mom and he told me that during one particularly heated argument she called him a "sonofabitch" without realizing its implication...
          • Heheh... I had a friend in the same situation. When his mom called him that, he said, "Damn Right!" and walked out of the house.
