Journal TheConfusedOne's Journal: Reflections on the election 3

Orson Scott Card lays down some pretty heavy words that are worth reflecting on.

Me, I'm going to vote and it'll be an almost straight Republican line. I'll vote for Leiberman because he's earned my respect on defense and I'm not a huge supporter of some of the social aspects of the Republican line. Yeah, Joe's a flaming liberal on everything except the war, but right now that's the big #1 thing in my book. (The image of Lamont with Sharpton behind him and people chanting "Bring them home!" was just too much.)

So, that's where I stand on this and I think Card's captured the big issue correctly.

  • So would somebody explain to me how the Republicans will win the war? So far, they've cut taxes, handed over "reconstruction" contracts to a bunch of crooks who did shoddy jobs and ran away with billions in profits, and have failed to mobilize the factories to make war material.

I don't believe the Republicans CAN win this war- they're so hyped up on small government and profits for billionaires that they've sacrificed any sembalance of security our country ever had just so that they can preserve cheap ill
  • As much as I love OSC's books (I re-read Ender's Game whenever my military enthusiasm flags - it has a way of reminding me about what is important) his politics are all over the map.

Here's the main problems as I see them:

    1) Afghanistan is horribly overlooked and underfunded. The invasion of Afghanistan was well-founded in the wake of 9/11; you have a country run by religious extremists who provide active support for the people carrying out acts of war on your own soil. It is right and just that that country
    • US military involvement in Afghanistan has steadily increased all through the time we've been involved in Iraq. There has been no "diversion" of resources or focus. Question for you: What was the troop level in Afghanistan before the Iraq war? What is it now?

As for Saddam not being involved in terrorism answer a few questions then. 1) What was Saddam doing sending $25,000 checks to the families of suicide bombers. 2) Why was the "secular" Saddam so busy spending money building giant mosques and havin
