Journal Espectr0's Journal: Did the U.S fund the coup? 12

In my first journal, someone asked what i thought about the U.S funding the april 11th coup in my country.

Some months ago, i was browsing Stallman's site and i was mad. He was defending my president (which he does not know) because he said the U.S had funded the coup, cheated on the Florida elections, etc etc.

Anyway, for those of you that have some credible information, comments are welcome.

Did the U.S fund the coup?

  • I just wanted to know what you think of it. Myself and most other US citizens only know about your country what the news media tells them. Do you feel comfortable posting your true feelings about your govt in this journal? Do you believe your govt currently has the ability to ease social problems or are they handcuffed by foreign affairs or effects of the world economy? Will you be journalling through the summer or taking a vacation?
    • It's sad and depressing. We have always been friendly to the states, but the current prez has killed all good relations. Now my visa has expired after 10 years and to get a renewal it's really difficult, and on top of that i have got family over there (they dont like that since they think you will stay over there)

I feel confortable talking about it, i wanted to hear some local U.S people talking about it too. Stallman says some hard stuff on his page, about the u.s goverment fundind the coup, etc. I really want the prez to resign and although it isn't good morally that other countries help to overthrown him, it's probably the only way we will get rid of him. He is very close to become a second Fidel Castro.

My goverment does not have the resources to resolve social problems, only make them, neither they are handcuffed to anyone. They don't care about anyone but themselves. Also, they are pro-guerrilla, pro-saddam, pro-fidel, pro-communism.

What do you mean about journaling through the summer? Summer is over. I go to collegue, and haven't had time of visiting the states since december 2000
  • Que bueno ver otro venezolano en slashdot.De que parte de Venezuela eres?
Podrias mandarme un link a lo que dice Stallman del "golpe" (segun chavez) a slashdot.10.tito@xoxy.net
  • I know some European newspapers claimed there was active US involvement, but they claim a lot of things that aren't true.

Just guessing -- while someone from the CIA may have been talking with the coup leaders, I very much doubt that there was an official US policy to overthrow the government. The response from Ari Fleischer and the rest of the Bush team was so confused that I can't believe they had thought about it at all.

    • maybe the govt is not directly linked to it, but some venezuelans living there may have been funding the oposition. It is known that all these strikes are paid, both the govt and opposition pay the people to go to strike. The problem is, that the money that the govt uses is the country's own money.
  • I suppose we'll never know. However, by the rumours I hear from my sister in Caracas, yes there was "indirect" help given through american business in the country. In anycase I dont think They'll get rid of chavez so easily.
