As I sit here puzzling thru one of many 1,500+ line stored proc that is formatting html for output in a website I just inherited, I can't help but wonder if this was premature optimization the only way they could get the site behaving properly. Only time will tell

    You have a stored procedure that is formatting HTML??? Talk about wrong solution to the wrong problem! The stored procedure should just return data - asp/php/jsp/whatever should be where you should be turning that data into HTML.
