Journal Mick Ohrberg's Journal: How's Your Online Spelling? 2

How much attention do you pay to how your spelling and grammar comes across while typing posts, blogs, emails and such? On a daily basis I see more and more bulletin board posts containing things like "u" instead of "you", misues of "their", "they're" and "there", as well as an occasional "OMG!!1 lolz!!1eleven". Granted, there are some pretty benign misspellings like "teh" instead of "the", while others are a bit more severe. Some (like double-capitalization) are caused by speed, while others (like "for all intensive purposes") are caused by sheer ignorance of the original phrase. A more disturbing trend may be the fact that corporate America seems to be heading the same direction - email from executives containing no capitalizations, or ending with "thx". The question I pose is - is this just regular language development and evolution, or is it a plague and a curse that should be eradicated at all cost? And no, I don't claim to be perfect. In fact, English isn't even my first language.

My spelling is definitely getting worse as time goes by. As the gap between now and my time receiving mandatory English lesssons increases, I'm finding myself making mistakes that before would have made me hurl. I'm talking about the super-disgusting bullshit like 'rediculuous', though admittedly a lot of it is down to typos.

Sometimes I even have to give up on a word and just find another one that I know how to spell instead. That sucks.

On the other hand, I am learning two other languages right now, so mayb

My spelling isn't great, but I try my best to check over posts and fix anything horribly wrong. I also try to check grammar and such, but I am pretty anal when it comes to writing. Of course it all depends on how much time I have; some days I have lots of time, while other days I am rushed. I do however find it sad that someone who isn't a native speaker writes better than 90% of the people who are native speakers :-| Sad and pathetic, no doubt about it.
