FYI - Each paragraph break = something completely different. So if I bore you at first, skip to the next paragraph.

Ordering my $30 40GB harddrive for my linux server. OK, linux sysadmin types. I have 3 HD's already in the box. Is it possible to "extend" the partitions (like make var bigger and put half the partition on the new harddrive)? I'm assuming that's a no, so to just have the 40GB in there, I should just mount the partitions /var2 /home2 etc... and do a massive cp (as root) in the / dir, turn off the system, then switch to the new HD (take the rest out) and call it a day, right?

Can you talk on your cell without changing your driving habits? No? Then GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANE!

Went to the Dentist today. I love my dental hygenist. Yeah, she's cute, but that's not the reason. She is so damn gentle. I have dreaded the dentist all my life. I have sensitive gums, and I usually leave the place a bleeding mess, and my gums are so swollen I can't eat solid food for a day. But after she is done, my mouth feels clean, it didn't hurt a bit, and nothing is bleeding and nothing is swollen. I leave the dentist in a happy mood! So if anyone lives in the Cincinnati Area and is looking for a totally kick-ass dentist, I got one to suggest to you.

That hurricane is actually causing a ton of non-stop rain in Cincinnati. Its nasty outside.

So, I'm driving back from the dentist to work (downtown). I drive close to work to find that ALL garages are full "monthly's only". Since I'm a consultant, I never get monthly passes, cause who knows how long I'll be at a location. So, being ballsy, I decide to enter the garage I usually go to anyway. As soon as the attendent notices that I was grabbing a ticket instead of using a pass, she literally jumped out of the both and ran in front of my car. Damnit. I tried being slick, cause she sees me every damn morning, but she hardly spoke english, so it was in vain. The garage exit is on a hard slope, with a turn and ends in two lanes with a small median between them. Of course, there is a post sticking out of the beginning of the median, and, although I made the turn, my back tires slid (lotsa rain, remember), and I put an involuntary pinstripe down the side of my grand cherokee. That changes my frustration in to plain out pissed off. I go driving around downtown and finally find an empty parking garage.... eight blocks away. And, of course, the umbrella is in the wife's car. So I get to work... wet. But at least the walk calmed me down. I'm just dreading going back to get the jeep. The scratch looks pretty deep too. Good thing I got over 140k miles on that jeep. Good thing I didn't drive the wife's new Grand Am...

On the encouragement of JMZero, I'm gonna try a little DirectX coding. Although, I'm gonna be really restrictive. If I get frustrated too much, too early, I may switch to Java3D (because I'm currently using Java, and it'd be more comfortable to code in).

I went from 214 fans to 270 in a week or two. That's one of my bigger jumps in a while. I don't recall saying anything that would get people 'on the bandwagon'. I have been collecting freaks, though (mostly yro people, because I keep calling them paranoid). Guess I'm just not an extremist when it comes to that kinda thing.

How do you do the blind icon thing? I just kinda hit arrow buttons with page-up&downs. Good 'nuff?

  • Using LVM, which is included in a growing set of distros (I know Mandrake 9 supports it out of the box), you can at least combine two disks into one logical disk. I believe it can do what you want to as well.

    You may have to reformat your drives, though.

    • LVM is a Great Thing. There's nothing like deciding /var has too much space, and having the freedom to reduce some of the space in /var and reallocate it to /home. All you have to do is bring the system into single-user mode (because /var is critical, and usually needs to be unmounted before shrinking)--no repartitioning, no massive file transfers to a new filesystem.

      With ReiserFS (if not other filesystems), you can even increase the size of a filesystem while it's mounted. So, I usually keep some free, unallocated space on my volume group (collection of physical disks) so I can add space on-the-fly as I need it in the future, without even having to go into single user mode.

      Adding another hard disk is easy, too. Pop one in, add one large "LVM" partition with fdisk, run a utility to make it a recognized LVM PV (physical volume), and add it to your volume group. Now you can add the new space to any of your existing filesystems.

      To get a good idea of what LVM is all about, check out the 10 Common Tasks [sistina.com] section of Sistina's LVM HOWTO [sistina.com]. It's not as hard to use as it may seem.

  • Go for OpenGL instead! Don't join the dark side! OpenGL isn't hard to use.

    That said, I love the JMZero game on the palm. Jumpman is my favorite game ever. Long live the C=64.

    • The only reason OpenGL turned me off (granted, I just dabbled, nothing serious), was that it required states and other things that makes OOP more difficult. If I could, say, get a free copy of Open Inventor (OOP wrapper, amongst other things), I'd prolly give it a whirl.

    you can't extend a partion over two drives... I used parted a few months ago when I added a drive to each of my machines at home... create partitions on the new drive... move old partoins to the new drive .. (cp -az or something like that..) resize the old partitions... it was kinda freaky there for a while.. (backups are a good thinkg (tm)) but everything has gone very well since then...



    You could always keep the old drive in and use it as /boot /root and /tmp have use the new drive for /var /usr and /home and / or just have a REALLY big swap partition.. lol..

    Yunz guyz gettin' rained on, too, 'n'at? Pittsburgh weather is supposed to be "Partly cloudy, chance of showers!" Check out the Weather Channel. [weather.com] There's a thick band of rain arcing up the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, through Pennsylvania, and right on through to Boston.

    This is a buzzkill. Rained out the Pirates' home finale. I was going to walk down there tonight. I love working two blocks from PNC Park. Unless it's Fireworks Night or a bobblehead night, you can walk up and get a good seat any day of the week. It was going to be Fan Appreciation Night, but it's pronounced Unload-the-leftover-promotional-items Night. No sw4g for j00!

    • and the same in columbus. raining on and on. i'm getting tired of the trend of really rainy spring and fall with an extraordinarily dry summer.

      but autumn is my favorite season. i like the temperature and the colors. that is, when it isn't raining all the time and you can still see the colors.
  • leviramsey called it: use LVM. Personally, I'd just copy shit over. It's really easy to find repair disks to fix up 'normal' partitions and so forth, even with ext3 or reiserfs. Not so easy with LVM setups. If the two drives are on different IDE cables, it won't take too long. Use 'cp -ax' as this will:

    copy recursively,
    preserve file permissions,
    stay on a single filesystem

    (of course, you may not want the latter).

    Did a similar thing to my car when I was bringing Angie home from the hospital last winter. Still don't have the money to fix it, but at least it's paid off, and has less than 60,000 miles on it. But, for owning a GM, you deserve what you get;) Unfortunately, there's a good chance my next car is a Ford Taurus. Safest vehicle short of an E-Class MB on the road in the states today. Hope you have the 5.2 in the Jeep (or the 5.9). Drove a Grand Cherokee with the 4.0, and it was... sad. Very overburdened. It was a great little engine in the Wranglers, not bad in the Cherokee's, but the Grand Cherokee just kills it. Nifty thing about the 4.2 (which is the AMC designed 258 straight six, precursor to the 4.0, descendant of the 232, I think) is that it has 5 main bearings (or was it 7?) In either case, you can run it at 40 mph for about 10 minutes with NO OIL and suffer not one bit. I miss my CJ 5.

    That's how I do random topics. But I pick again if I get a common topic like RH, M$, etc.

    And it should also be noted that when getting out of the left lane, do not do it when my car is in the right lane, directly beside your vehicle.

    I leapt on the bandwagon earlier last week after I randomly wandered into your journal. Good read during my lunch break.

    BTW, you seem to be in contact with several slashdot mods, and I've got something really, really wierd going on here. I've got mod points finally (oldest 90% after months on ./), but I can't metamoderate. Isn't that wierd? Any clue who I'd contact on that?
    • have you tried directly linking [slashdot.org] to the metamod screen first?
      Back when I first could metamod, there was a bug that required you to directly go to the page before it'd appear on the frontpage.

      If that doesn't work, I'd either write a bug on it ("bugs" link on the left side of any /. page), or I'd email taco or jamie about it.
      • Yup, tried directly going to it. It says I'm not elig to moderate.

        Which is why I'm blowing through 4 of the 5 points before I report it... if I was rtbl'd or something, and having points is a bug, I'd like to enjoy the experience.
