The Cat in the Rack

Aside from your rather obvious bias, why go for a Sun rack? A generic no-name rack would have been much cheaper, and would work just as well. Sun are sensible like that, and make adjustable mounting rails to fit whatever rack you have. Unlike, say Compaq/HP, who insist you use a rack exactly the right size. Which is fine up until the point where you want to put in a box from another manufacturer that also insists on a fixed size rack... naturally a different fixed size to the HP one. Sigh.
    • Other than the obvious bias:

      A) It was affordable (including paying for delivery [seller rented a van and showed up the next day, 4 or 5 hour drive each way]) as I got it on ebay for a steal.

      B) Length. E250 servers are VERY long. A friend has one and he get a regular, generic (not networking components only, I mean a phone-booth style) and the server stuck out the front and the back.

      C) This one might be a little under the "bias" heading, but I have one of these same racks at work and if I need a part I can
  • This is at home? In which case, at least I know someone who is worse than me.

In my little server room I only have a Sun Ultra 5 (plus 250GB disk) - a media server and firewall/router/etc. and a VAX. I suppose if you work for Sun it's prolly a bit easier to get hold of the kit to put in the rack at a decent price.

    • I should probably post a JE explaining this, but notice my profile is that is now "used" to work for Sun.

I still deal with Sun things in my new job, but I left to more than double my pay. Now I work for the largest employer in the US. Yep, the Federal Gov. In my case, the DoD (more specifically with the Navy). I get to do nearly all of the things I loved of the old job, minus the actual classroom lead teaching part for more pay, less stress, better management, you know the deal... Maybe I'll pick up a
  • That's one nice rack you got there....wish I had one!

Adorable cat! I want a net monitor that looks like that :)
    • You should see his eyes when we're under a ping flood!
      • I'm surprised they would still work after one of them!
      • LOL that traffic monitor is too funny, cool setup you have going..regarding Messiah, my brother in law's sister went there and spoke very highly of it, so for what it's worth it may be a good place to work.
        • Thanks for the info.

I've heard other nice things about working there as well. When I taught at PSU the one Math professor was fed up with a few things and left to teach there for a seemester. I think he liked it, but it was a longer drive for him so when PSU gave in he went back.

It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.

Working...
