I have a dated Athlon XP 1800+ with 512MB RAM. I just got a new motherboard(VIA KM400 + 8237 chipset), after the old one died about a year ago. I have removed everything that is not required, disabled all integrated components except for IDE, disabled SATA (which i thought was the original problem) and have taken out my 120gig SATA drive for an old IDE 40gig WD caviar, I've tried more things than I can think of. I get the same error no matter what. I get the same error if I don't have anything but the CD-ROM attached, I've tried different cables, I've tried different combinations of which drive (out of the CDROM and HD) were slave master or IDE 0 or 1.

If anyone knows anything about this i would be extremely greatful.

  • I just got a new Dell that had a similar problem. If the thing sat cold for an hour or so I would get a very similar message when I turned it on. At first I did not think too much of it but eventually I realized I could re-produce it. I ran memtest86 which kept giving me errors for test #5. Called Dell tech support and they were not too helpful; they kept telling me it was software related, spy-ware/ad-ware/other sorts of mal-ware, and refused to recognise the memtest86 tests. • Thanks for responding, memtest was a good idea, and I'm definatly going to keep it handy in the future along with my other 'important' CDs. The memory tested fine, and i was starting to just curse microsoft for being lame and everything, but realized I hadn't even bothered trying another OS, and since i'd been wanting to play with it for a while anyway i downloaded ubuntu and it halts everytime at 86% of "detecting hardware to find CD-ROM drives" I looked through the different views and found it stopped at:
