Ok, so I'm reading my friend's JEs, and switch back to my "messages" page and there are no messages there!

I flipped back and forth between different screens and no dice. Nothing comes up.

Fine. I'll do the stupid "log out, log back in" thing. Hrm, my main page says "21 New Messages". Click on the linky that they give and *Poof* NOTHING. No messages.

Now mind you, I have already looked at several JEs, and commented in one before this happened.

What gives?

The day after Wednesday.

Wednesday being the day of the week when Slashdot rolls out any new code.

Mine does this sometimes, and other times, the messages are far, far down the page. Scroll down all the way, if that doesn't show them, go view the source code, because they're still in there and that will at least tell you who's posted something to find through their info or journal.

Now, of course, they are back and working fine. I'll remember that trick if it ever happens again.

Had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago

I went three days without messages. Tried switching browsers- they showed up at home with firefox, but IE was reporting a strange syntax error in the javascript. Tried updating IE, no dice. It went away entirely after 5 days though, with still no reason for the outage.
