Journal Chacham's Journal: Link of the day: www.popvssoda.com 2

I was just directed to The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy, though *no comment* mentioned it first in "this" reference and capoccia had a nice JE on the topic.

The best part is reading the "other" comments.

The political comments:

for the person who thinks that florida uses the correct name by calling it COKE because they're so civilized, just like their friends in alabama and mississippi who also call it coke, i dont think the votes from florida should count. they probably meant to vote for Soda but got confused by the unclear ballot and picked Coke accidentaly. the correct term is SODA

The English major:

This is the proper truth- POP is used when referring to the past/present tense, as in "I drank too much Pop/I am drinking Pop." SODA is used when referring to the future tense as in "Would you like a Soda/I will have a Soda/Grab me a Soda." and COKE is used when referring to any Cola based drink regardless of brand (ie. Pepsi, RC, Like, Shasta, etc.)

The caring individual:

I grew up saying pop, but switched to saying soda when I was a waitress. I felt that soda had a much softer sound to it. Pop is short and abrupt. During college many of my mid-west friends teased me because I said soda. I just moved to Virginia this past year and I fit in well saying soda.

The hip hop master:

I grew up saying "SODA," but now I've married into an Ohio family, so I decided to say "POP." This isn't unusual for me I decided at 21 to stop saying "y'all" and say "you guys" instead. Anyway, I just think "POP" is a much hipper, cooler sounding word... And it makes it sound like you're taking something kind of exotic...

The college professor:

It is Soda- Pop hasnt been used by an intelligent person since the bicentennial

The etymologist:

Historically, the correct term is 'phosphate', which was defined by soda jerks as being a flavored syrup mixed with carbonated water. 'Soda's were what we today call floats. Therefore Soda is clearly WRONG and pop is more acceptable as a shortening of phosphate.

The caring individual:

soft drink. Be aware that this is common in the South, where I am from, and using 'pop' or 'soda' will get you a VERY peculiar look.

The lexicographer:

"pop" for a general term (not countable) "soda" if i mean a specific amount like a can of soda

The paranoiac:

I SAID POP IN PA BUT CHANGED TO SODA WHEN I MOVED TO RHODE ISLAND DUE TO EXTERME PEER PRESSURE

The person who sets things in context:

Hey, why don't you work on a cure for cancer or something else important.

The social philosopher:

Pop is correct. Calling it "soda" implies soda water, and strikes me as an East/West coast attempt to sound sophisticated - like there's anything sophisticated about drinking sugar water. Even calling it "coke" makes more sense than "soda."

The non-Michiganer:

Its COKE when referring to either Coke or pepsi (because as we all know Coke is soooo much better than Pepsi~therefore, Coke is your first preference)...Your only allowed to say "Pop" if your from Canada or Michigan

Eureka:

i found proof that it is called soda the only reason i choose other is so i could right this if you want to see the proof look at the side of a diet right case it says artificially flavored SODA

Sheino yodeah lishol:

Hey, can I enter bhtml/b here?

The fished:

Hey person who wrote this..."Pop is correct. Calling it soda implies soda water, and strikes me as an east/west coast attempt to sound sophisticated - like there's anything sophisticated about drinking sugar water. Even calling it coke makes more sense than soda." The person who wrote this obviously is a redneck who is jealous of his cosmopolitan superiors living on the coasts. Guess what? We are more sophisticated than you. We can speak english correctly. There are some of you who claim pop is the correct term because it is short for soda-pop. In that case, soda is short for soda-pop, too. It just sounds less like a hick is saying it.

The we'll just agree to disagree:

I have grown up saying POP...but to everyone else...whatever floats your boat...its a free country and it all means the same thing! You call it what you want ill call it what i want...thats wut makes it fun! duh!

The hypocrite:

Hey you idiots, the "Other" option asked for a word. Notice that this is the singular form of the noun word. Inane diatribes by city folk, southerners, New Yorkers and California fruits (all are distinctions without real differences) used to insult your superiors is evidence of your intellectual enervation and paucity of sophistication. Truly civilized people drink coffee...no sugar, no cream and lots of caffeine.

The kill-joy:

Honestly, whatever you call it, soda is still going to rot your teeth. Did you know if you let a tooth soak in Coka-cola it will be gone within a few days? How disgusting!!! It's all a big advertising ploy, it doesn't even taste good!! Now if I want a soda, I will ask for "orange soda," "Sprite," "Grape soda," or whatever kind it actually is. But realistically, I'd prefer water over a soda any day I only order soda at the bar when the bartender gets sick of my requests for "water with lemon" because that's always free. Call it what you want, but next time you enjoy that fizzy feeling in your mouth, think about how your teeth feel and what they're going to look like in ten years and you may think twice about even ordering the junk.

The anti-Canadian:

According to the statistics at this very moment, if you look at "Total", you'll see a slight edge of "pop" (60977 vs 57643). But if you click on "Show US only", then you'll see a reversal, with soda having a tight lead (55835 vs 53968). This means Canada is tipping the scales. What the hell is going on up there? 5535 pop to 241 soda ... it's no wonder they have ducks on their money.

The one that says it all:

i just want to write something
