Is SVG dead on the desktop?

I've tried to "Ask Slashdot", but the editors are too busy accepting dupes, and and endless stream of insipid stories that fit better on the NY Post - so here it is. I've drawn my own conclusions, but I've gotten a number of feedbacks that imply otherwise. I would love to know how the general tech community feels, as the feedback I've gotten is obviously the motivated and selected, obviously who have a vested interest in SVG.

Is SVG Dead?

  • What needs to happen to SVG is a nice builder IDE like flash did to swf. But the only reason I can think of anyone not doing it is because they are afraid SVG will just become flash, lose credability, and die a horrible backlash death. That and they may decide that swf already does all these things, and while some may like the format of svg better, swf has had a big big headstart. Thus, the 800 lb gorilla doesn't sit in the corner, it walks around, eats svg, and poops it into the corner.
