Journal Abm0raz's Journal: It's like a broken rollercoaster 26

You know that feeling when you're going up the begining of a roller coaster and each "click" you hear on the way up the first drop brings exhileration from anticipation? Well yesterday was that. Waiting for comencement tomorrow (friday) and looking forward to getting things going in my life.

Well, now I'm at that top of the incline, looking down and seeing that the track stops, but the fall doesn't. I can see one lonely, hook-shaped, rusty nail sticking out of the wall several miles down (yeah, my eyes are that good) and have that pit in my stomach cause I know my eyelid will get caught on it during the free fall before hitting the spiked rocks below.

My boss showed up today for a surprise meeting. The same boss that has stuck by me, encouraged me to go back and get my degree, let me drop to part-time while in school, promissed me they'd hire me back full time when I was done, and been pretty damn understanding when I had to call in saying, "Sorry, I have to study more for my exam tonight. I'll be on call today, but I need to go to the library." Yeah, that boss. He took me to lunch to celebrate (I have a cold, so I didn't really eat) and I was expecting to receive my full-time offer when he said (paraphrased):

"Congratulations on graduating. We're not going to be hiring you back full-time. If you want to continue working part time, you will have to move to Ebensburg(1) and take the resulting cost of living difference pay cut. You have till next friday to decide. By the way, enjoy the lunch(2) as a graduation gift."

So, those that read this journal that I know, Tomorrow's graduation party is off, since I have ~$200 in the bank and may need that just to survive till I find another job. I'm under contract with my lease until September so I may be working at the bars again just to pay the bills. On that note, I may not be around /. anymore because the first bill that will be cut will be cable tv/modem.

If anyone needs me, I'll be the guy in the corner with the handle of grain waving a crayon diploma and wearing a "Do Not Resucitate" T-shirt.

(1) Ebensburg is a shit-hole little town about 75min west/north-west of Pittsburgh. The highlight of it's existance are that it has a McDonalds and it's at the top of the mountains, so there is STILL snow there today. The cost of living is about nil because everything is so run-down and crime-laden.

(2) Lunch consisted of a hotel resteraunt where they didn't even have soup. I got a burger and fries, ate about 1/4 of the burger and 3 fries and got a to-go box. Oh, and I had to leave the tip.

  • Well that fucking sucks.

Was he at least apologetic about it? Did he explain why they couldn't despite him telling you they would?

That sucks man, it'll get better though, it always does. Don't look at that nail, it is to far in the future to be a certainty. Your rollercoaster has about 20 side tracks branching off, all waiting for you to find a better one to be on.
  • I hadn't even gotten a chance to congratulate you. :^(
  • And he made you pay the tip? bastard.
  • Do you have an IM account? If so, I am dexterpexter (that is dexterpe x ter--for some reason people to leave off the second 'x') on just about every flavor of IM client. Shoot me a message before you cut the Internet connection.

I said it yesterday, but I repeat it today:
Congratulations on the graduation. This unfortunate development should not take away from your accomplishment.
  • Sorry to hear that.

Don't forget your password though... It would take forever for me to see the new A8m0raz and figure out it was you.
  • hey dude,

It's tough right now, but this might be the best thing that's happened to you so far, besides the gruditation thang you're doing today.

I see several options for you:

    1) you blast teh dot with your skills, letting folks like Mr Leet and Josh and those around your area know your skillset so you can see if they can help. (Do this while collecting unemployment and doing recommendation #2)

    2) start blasting resumes out to the world. You're relatively young, somewhat inexpensive to hire (no slam, jus
    • i'd like to second em's thought here... but also to tell you... that if you are interested in the batlimore/dc area... please... drop me a line ASAP. why?

i work for a small software consultancy (we specialize in coldfusion, java, asp/.net, c++ etc.) and well... we just had a recruiting open house last night because we are having a problem filling all of the open slots we have. we get new project work like its going out of style.

i mean... its so bad we have to turn down new work. so please... shoot me an e
  • Where are you?

    What do you do?

Feel free to use my email... I know people everywhere.

Shit. Damn. That sucks man. Things will turn out though. And what's better is you'll have a diploma. A diploma DOES COUNT for something.

Best wishes and I'm sorry for the Scottish dickhead comment. ;)
    • :P im whatching you btlzu2 hehe , soon youll have all the Scotts on Slashdot chasing after you .

On the topic though , What a bunch of ***** ******** **** *more explitives****
Its a sad day when you find you can no longer trust people to honour their words.
If the boss was in any way unsure he shouldn't of given you the promiss , I know under scottish law that an oral contract is as binding as a the written word, not sure about the USA , so probably not much you can do about it .

Although him leading you to t
  • What do you do? Where are you willing to move to?

You don't want to work for a company that treats you like that anyway.

  • Do you know anyone in Chicago who could put you up for a little while? There are some really good jobs out here. Get me a resume (vladinator@gmail.com) and I'll pass it around if you like.
  • Northern Virginia is stuffed full of defense contractors. There ARE jobs here. With the base realignments, Ft. Belvoir is probably going to get a bunch of new people in, and with those people come contacts. If you are willing to relocate it might be a very good possibility for you.

Presently the company for which I work is not hiring, but that's because we have a bunch of props out and they haven's come back yet.

  • Can you post another JE with a resume or some kinda skillset list to give us a better idea of what you're looking for. My employer, while down in SC, is always hiring for various programming and support postitions.

  • A stint in the military, at least the reserves.
They lack in the IT department like anybody else, so there is opportunity.
You just have to keep your creativity on the down-low.
  • For the graduation, and the shaft.

Like others have said, maay be an oppportunity in disguise. What sort of work do you want, and what are your geographic limitations?

  • That sucks. Congratulations on matriculating, though. Now you can join the swelling ranks of those of us who are overeducated and underemployed, I guess.

I will keep my ear to the ground for you as well, since you did me a good turn last year. :)
  • Sorry 'bout the boss being a complete dick. At least you have a diploma in hand, though...

Like others have said, post a résumé. Surely someone here's looking or knows someone who is.

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

  • ... unlike some of the other posters here, I am going to part with their words and say do not post your resume on Slashdot, especially if you are thinking about going to work for one of the defense contractors.

I would suggest, if you want to post it online, post your resume someplace like livejournal (this only comes to mind because it is common and you can easily filter people) under "friends only", announce it here, and then those interested in helping can go get lj accounts for you to allow. Yes, it m
    • I think most of what I said can be interpreted fine, although I recognize that my parent post reads like a ten year old wrote it. heh.

      I will clarify:
I would not post your resume in an open format. It might mean more viewership and thus more opportunity, but you might also be unknowingly placing yourself at risk for identity theft, and locking yourself out of some jobs.
If you plan to post your resume without first locking it, I would suggest not posting it in "I want to job, hire me" format. Perhaps you
    • I work for a defense contractor and haven't heard of this being asked, even when the employer is looking to seek a clearance for the potential employee. While it doesn't seem like a bad idea to be mindful of the posibility, potential identity theives would have to copy everybody's resume (not so hard) and then find out which of those everybodies has been hired on (a bit harder).

Abm0raz, if you'd like me to search job listings with my employer, General Dynamics, email me (at my listed gmail addy) where you l

      • I have seen it be asked, not that I am saying that it's common. It is just something to consider. My own program discourages the open posting of resumes, although as I said in a later post, I have done so in the past without any negative result.

Also, the identity thieves do not care if you have been hired on as much as many people with the type of qualifications to work on that side of the fence (and not just defense contractors. I only mention them because of my experience with them. This is true of
        • Gotcha on the resume posting. Personally I never found the idea of just having a resume floating on the vast web that appealing, basically because I like to do things on my terms. More to the point, I want to try to network my way into a company before they see the resume.

I suppose, however, that a highly qualified individual that actually exists would be a ripe target for ID theft. I just didn't think of it from the angle of trying to get a job as them, rather than utilizing a current job. I'd hope that so
