Submission + - Microsoft Exemption From Antitrust Bill Followed Donation to Top Lawmaker (freebeacon.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Rep. David Cicilline (D., R.I.) exempted Microsoft from a bill he sponsored to regulate big tech three months after he received $5,800 in donations from Microsoft president Brad Smith, FEC filings show.

Cicilline's decision to accept the money marked an about-face for the Rhode Island congressman, who swore off big tech money in 2019. Cicilline is the lead sponsor of the American Choice and Innovation Online Act, which would ban tech companies above a certain size from using their platforms to unfairly promote their own products. The bill originally applied to platforms with 500,000 monthly active users. Earlier this month, the threshold was quietly changed to 50 million active users, a change that would exempt Microsoft.

Cicilline did not explain why the bill text had changed to exclude Microsoft. But the donation from Microsoft’s CEO raises questions of how much influence tech companies have over bills designed to regulate their industry. In 2019, Cicilline announced he would not take money from big tech companies.

Microsoft has recently censored terms offensive to the Chinese Communist Party, including "Tiananmen Square" and "tank man," from its search engine Bing. It also banned discussion of the "lab leak" hypothesis from LinkedIn, the social networking platform it owns.

Submission + - Xbox's DirectStorage API Will Speed Up Gaming PCs On Windows 11 Only (pcgamesn.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Microsoft has finally debuted Windows 11, and it’s not just packing auto HDR and native Android apps. The long-teased DirectStorage API that’s meant to cut down loading times on gaming PCs much in the same way the Xbox Velocity Architecture speeds things up on Microsoft’s consoles is on its way, and it won’t be coming to Windows 10 like we originally thought. The Windows 11 exclusive feature improves communication between your storage device and graphics card, allowing assets to load quicker without having to pass through the CPU first. Naturally, this means more time spent gaming and less time reading the same hints as you move from area to area.

It’ll work best with systems that are dubbed ‘DirectStorage Optimised’, containing the right hardware and drivers for the job. If you’re more of the DIY type that prefers to build the best gaming PC yourself, requirements demand an NVMe SSD with 1TB of storage or more. PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs and the latest GPUs from Nvidia and AMD will offer a better experience, but DirectStorage will still work with older standards like the third generation PCIe 3.0 – you won’t have much luck with 2.5-inch SATA drives, though. DirectStorage will only work with games built using DirectX 12, so there’s no telling how many titles will support the feature when you upgrade to Windows 11 for free later this year.

Randseed writes: If you own a Western Digital MyBook Live, WD suggests you disconnect it. They aren't saying whether it's a bug, attack, or feature, but some users have found their data wiped from their external drives. It isn't clear what genius decided to design an external hard drive with remote wipe capability, but surely time will tell. It also isn't clear yet whether this only affected people using the WDLive cloud service, or whether the drives did some shenanigans with punching holes in users' firewalls (like uPNP) to expose themselves. https://arstechnica.com/gadget...

PuceBaboon writes: Ars Technica is reporting that some owners of Western Digital "My Book" network connected disk drives are experiencing data loss on their devices. The as yet unverified problem appears to be an externally initiated factory-reset, resulting in a loss of all existing data. At this early stage, Western Digital is warning users that they should disconnect their devices from the Internet to protect their data.

Submission + - SCOTUS: No Emergency? Get a Warrant. (reason.com) 1

schwit1 writes: The state of California has "argued that the pursuit of a suspected misdemeanant always qualifies as an exigent circumstance authorizing a warrantless home entry," Kagan observed in her majority opinion, which was joined in full by Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. But that sweeping argument, Kagan declared, ran afoul of both SCOTUS precedent and the Fourth Amendment's common law roots.

"When the totality of circumstances shows an emergency—such as imminent harm to others," Kagan observed, "the police may act without waiting." But "when the nature of the crime, the nature of the flight, and surrounding facts present no such exigency," she held, "officers must respect the sanctity of the home—which means they must get a warrant."

Submission + - Police Arrest Three For Posting 10 Minute Movie Summaries on YouTube (torrentfreak.com)

AmiMoJo writes: Police in Japan have arrested three individuals who uploaded so-called 'fast movies' to YouTube. These edits of mainstream movie titles, that use copyrighted content to reveal entire plotlines in around 10 minutes, are said to discourage people from watching the originals, costing the industry hundreds of millions in lost revenue. According to Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), there are channels with hundreds of uploads being viewed tens of millions of times, often with a for-profit motive. This means that they may fall outside traditional ‘fair use‘ style exceptions.

Miyagi Prefectural Police Life Safety Division and the Shiogama Police Station arrested three suspects under suspicion of uploading ‘fast movies’ to YouTube without the rightsholders’ consent. The arrests were reportedly carried out under the Copyright Act, which was boosted with new amendments on January 1, 2021.

“From June to July 2020, the suspects edited ‘I Am a Hero’ and two other motion pictures owned by Toho Co., Ltd. as well as ‘Cold Fish’ and one other motion picture owned by Nikkatsu Corporation down to about 10 minutes without the permission of the right holders. Further, the suspects added narration and uploaded the videos to YouTube to earn advertising revenue,” CODA explains.

Submission + - Intensifying Thunderstorms Today Echo an Ancient Pattern @Least 50,000 Years Old (sciencealert.com)

schwit1 writes: Thunderstorms that roil across the Southern Great Plains of the US are amongst the strongest of such storms on Earth. Known as mesoscale convective systems, these storm complexes provide up to 90 percent of the region's total annual rainfall.

Their intensity and frequency have been increasing, yet our best climate models still struggle to predict just how and when they'll arise.

To help refine climate models for the Southern Great Plains, paleoclimatologist Christopher Maupin from Texas A&M University and colleagues used oxygen and hydrogen isotopes to track the ferocity of past storms.

Using another set of isotopes, this time measuring those of uranium and thorium, the team dated the stalactites and stalagmites to around the last Ice Age, 30-50 thousand years ago.

Measuring the shifts in oxygen and hydrogen isotopes down their lengths allowed the researchers to see the storms cycled from weakly to strongly organized, roughly every thousand years. The more strongly organized the complex of storms becomes, the more intense and damaging they are.
